This is actually an interesting question. I use the term all the time and people ask me what I mean by "northwoods". My definition is usually anywhere north of highway 8, whats yours?
I've always considered Hwy 8 as the line,coming up 51/39 after wausau is the
gateway but once you get past hwy 8 & see exits for tomahawk, rhinelander,
eagle river & trails start crossing the road every few miles you know your there.
