Long before the Ram, Dodge gave us the Power Wagon and here's the pics and the story of one that's been rebuilt for well over $100,000.

Hey, this is a Chrysler product we can actually believe Clint Eastwood would drive.

The Legacy Power Wagon is a customized version of Dodge’s 1946-1968 vintage truck, refurbished and fitted with modern underpinnings. Built by Legacy Classic Trucks, a small outfit in the suitably rugged, yet upscale locale of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the old girl has plenty of new tricks.

Legacy starts with the chassis of an original donor vehicle, puts it through a frame-off restoration, primes and paints it on a rotisserie rig to hit every nook and cranny, then goes to work on the running gear and interior appointments.

The trucks are built to order and can be had with a variety of engines including a fuel-injected 360 cubic-inch Magnum V8 stroked to 426 cu-in or a 4.5-liter 4-cylinder Cummins turbodiesel engine with 500 lb-ft of torque. Manual and automatic transmissions are available and a 4x4 drivetrain comes standard with Dynatrac and Dana axles, locking differentials and an Atlas transfer case.

The tow-rating is a healthy 8,000 pounds, while a long-travel leaf-sprung suspension with Bilstein shocks can be complimented with a set of beadlock wheels for off-road capability that would likely give a Jeep Scrambler a run for its money. Even if you overdo it, a 16,500-pound front-mounted winch should be enough to get you out of trouble.

Inside, the Power Wagon gets an all-new quarter-inch steel plate dashboard with bespoke New Vintage gauges and Carling rocker switches, along with a set of leather upholstered captain’s chairs.

Along with the standard cab model, Legacy can do extended cab and four-door versions or a Carryall-style SUV. Prices are slightly higher than the $1,627 list price of the 1946 original, starting at $119,950 and running up to $249,000 for a Woodie wagon with bodywork constructed from mahogany and ash that takes 2,000 man hours to make.

Nevertheless, business has been brisk by boutique auto shop standards. Company founder Winslow Bent says that in the three years he’s been in business he’s delivered 25 trucks around the world and has five more under construction.

Cool truck, but for that kind of coin, many other "toys" I'd rather spend it on, if I had it to spend!

I'm a big Dodge guy...trucks, jeeps and cars...all mopar. But if he's found 25 customers he's found 25 people with too much money. I would've much rather seen a 5.9 Cummins offered and can you please explain why the dash is made of a 1/4" plate of steel??? I'll keep this in mind if I ever become filthy rich and need a fairly cool tax right off.

For that big a pile of coins, I think I 'druther snag one of these:

Click → Earthroamer.com.

Preferably one of the (click →) XV-LT models. (EarthRoamer XV-LTs are built on four wheel drive, turbo diesel powered, Ford F-550, commercial duty cab chassis trucks. With a 19,500 pound gross vehicle weight rating and up to a 12,500 pound towing capacity. Typical prices for a completed 2012 model year EarthRoamer XV-LT ranges from around $233,000 to over $400,000 depending on options and custom work.)

Or, the BIG MOMMA, the (click →) XV-HD. (The Ford F-650 based EarthRoamer XV-HD. The “HD” stands for Heavy Duty and this beast is the very definition of heavy duty. Price? I think the old saying: "If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it." may apply here:):

I see a parallell between the owners of these trucks and those of us with snowmobiles.

Practical? Not really.
Over Priced? You bet.

But they bring happiness to their owners whether it be the Power Wagon on Steroids or the latest Mountain Buster from Polaris.

Different income levels for sure but at the start of each day we all put our pants on one leg at a time.

Enjoy the ride!

Because when these behemoth machines travel across swampy lands...they sink to the bottom and one needs a rather large hunk of metal to attach the magnet to draw them back to the surface. They do NOT tread lightly!

We had one of these machines for years, which was my Uncle's pride and joy. It was actually a WW2 ambulance conversion of sorts that was barebones in the interior but it was designed to run thru the bush, over the bush and get stuck in anything wet...why? Because the tires were the old WW2 kind that had a center solid and wings on both sides, which if not nearly worn out, would have been fine but he could not find a set that had tread life left. Never the less, we drove over 4 inch maple trees in the name of "turning around" and the wrenches were broken out to do some "final adjustments". Oh, and the gas gauge was a stick found along the road that you dipped into the tank to see the "mark".

It did have a power-take-off winch that had cable big enough to lift battle ships out of the water which came in handy for taking big trees down with the aid of a saw that looked like they would fall on the cabin back in the woods.

If that wasn't enough imagine towing this machine via a tow-hitch to his big ole Chyrsler New Yorker which he would proceed to tow 650 miles each way for a few years to camp from Columbus Ohio where he lived all the way to the U.P. That worked marginally until one year the roads were glare ice going home and his hair got greatly grayed out on that trip. After that he decided that paying $25/mo to store it up north was a smarter choice.
