Obituary: Polaris, Arctic Cat founder Edgar Hetteen

Edgar Hetteen, the northern Minnesotan who helped start the pioneering Polaris and Arctic Cat snowmobile companies, has died.


He co-founded Polaris in 1954 in northern Minnesota and started Arctic Cat after leaving Polaris.

Hetteen died Saturday at age 90. He had been living in Grand Rapids.
"A tireless promoter of the fun of snowmobiling, Edgar made spreading the word to the world about this winter sport his life's work," reads Hetteen's biography on the Snowmobile Hall of Fame and Museum website. Hetteen was inducted in 1990 into the hall, based in St. Germain, Wis.

It is a sad day for the snowmobile community. I had the pleasure to meet Edgar and visit with him a few times. Our club had him speak at the Snowmobile North Dakota convention in 2003 and he showed a video of his 1960 trip across Alaska. If you like the history of snowmobiling you should read his book Breaking Trail. RIP Edgar
