Off-trail snowmobile use OK in Iron County forests

HURLEY -- Iron County forests will be open to off-trail snowmobiling for the first time this winter season.



The opening date for snowmobiling in Iron County has not yet been set by the Iron County Recreation Council. Snowmobilers generally can take to the trails the first Monday in December, after Wisconsin's gun-deer season ends -- that's Dec. 7.



This year marks the first season of off-trail snowmobiling on the Iron County forest, on logging roads and trails that are not gated, signed or bermed.

Better see this JD post Wis. Senate Bill 264 under Misc. before you assume you can venture off the marked trail. State law trumps county.

The law (bill) says without the consent of the owner. So if the county is giving open consent for its property, thens its OK. Just wondering on state land...if we are the state, are we not the owners? Cant we give ourselves consent?

Sweet! Close to 80% of the land in Iron County (in/around Hurley) is county forest land! That's why they have such a great trail system--and now--Boondogging, too!

Is county land part of the state of WI? I can see me telling the state troopers but wait the county said it is OK........264 SUCKS!

Sorry, I let that go the wrong way. There is county forest, and there is state forest. So if the county says it gives permission, then good, you can go on "county forest" as the county is the owner and the bill states the owner has to give permission. Now, what about State forest is the other situation. How much state forest is in Iron county--which is different from county forest.

Who elected the people that proposed this bill anyway? Lets impeach!!!

Does the Chequamegan stretch into Iron County? I know it encompasses a lot of Sawyer and Ashland countys, that's Federal, which as far as I know, is still open to off trail, unless specifically noted.
