Opinion on 01 Polaris 500 Classic for kids

Found an 01 Classic 500 with 3,200 miles for sale near me, asking $1,500. From pictures it looks to be clean. Guy is selling an enclosed trailer too, so it might be something that stayed out of the salt.

Wondering if would be a good sled for kids to learn on, say starting at 12. Concerned it might be too much power, but I'm not sure what that 500 has. I had 500 Liberty - I think it was an 04, and if I remember right that would have been a lot of power for a kid.

Depends on the kid. That's not what I would consider an unpredictable and "fast" machine. Reasonable kid would easily handle it. Kid that's only run a XBox controller would be a different story.

Wrap the bars with some foam and electric tape and let em have at it!! That will act as throttle stop. Kids are gonna be kids if they got a 120 or a 900. Throttle stop is what you need. However I caution that I don't have kids. I was a kid at one time with a 340TX free air. I learned how to wrench and how to fiberglass thanks to that sled!!

I still have a 2001 Polaris 600 Classic. The 500 should be a great sled for your kid. My daughter was riding my 600 and she is not a big kid. I think it depends a lot on their riding skills to be honest.

This is a great idea if your dealing with a kid with very little experience. In fact someone could do it anyway until they were sure their kid understood the sled.

Yeah was wondering about that to slow it down. My 12 year old is big kid and cautious. My younger 2 are both 9 and smaller and less cautious.

my son is 12 and has been riding my old 2000 indy 500 for years. in fields he will hold it wide open from one end to the next and turn around and do it again and again, its a perfect sled for kids in my opinion!
easy to turn yet stable, enough power for fields and exciting but not scary fast, doesnt get stuck easily...
