Opinions on skid plates...how well do they work??

Looks like I can pick up an OEM skid plate off ebay for my Fusion for next to nothing (like $40). Just wondering how effective they are. Will they really save the belly pan/bulkhead or are they more just for looks? I personally haven't hit anything but the more I ride off trails I'm sure it's inevitable at some point. I do keep my sled insured but it would suck to hit something and ruin a trip or get stuck somewhere...

Buy it! lets stumps and such slide past the bulkhead and potentially saves a total loss!

Then work great until you hit something hard enough that they don't work! lol They are a good addition to any off trail sled IMO.

I guess it depends on how much off-trail you do....in my experience (no off-trail other than 2-tracks and forest roads) they've served no purpose other than to get in the way when replacing A-arm bushings and adjusting alignment (on a Doo; can't speak for other brands). When I got mine I didn't really realize what the purpose was for. My next one won't have one. But if I did any amount of serious off-trail riding it would be a different story.

i look at it as the same as air bags in a car its just a extra saftey item
even if your a trail rider they are good to have you never know when you might get caught off or need to drop off the trail.. not only do they protect the belly but also provide added float to the front end in deeper snow. all my sleds get them

Thanks for the feedback. How do they provide more float - just a smoother or more slipperly surface than what they are covering?

If you have ever replaced a bulkhead you use skid plates. They can help a lot. You don't have to nail a stump head on to appreciate them. I have seen many 'minor' crashes where a skidplate would have resulted in no damage. However the bulkhead is tweaked forever. One of the cheapest and worthwhile mods you can do to any sled.
