Ya Skylar its killing me... I just read this post on another forum, pretty crazy story...
I had a full day today. I got up and there was almost no snow on the mountains near my home, but I looked at the snow map anyway. About 50 miles away I could see an area with more than a foot so I decided to go find it.
Unloaded at 6900, only about 5" of snow, by the time I got to 8400 there was about a foot. I was just beginning to have fun in the deeper snow, and came zipping around a corner and found to guys scrambling up out of the ravine trying to get my attention. I stop to ask whats up, they inform me that they had been elk hunting and camped up at 9000'. They awoke to find deep snow and tried to drive out, chained up the truck but still didn't make it out and lost the truck down over the embankment. They had been walking for 2 days thru deep snow, they looked "shaken". The horse they had could barely stand, they tell me that the other horse died of exhaustion the night before. They almost died the previous night themselves as they got too cold before trying stop for the night and were shaking with cold trying to get a fire started.
I spent the next couple hours ferrying their gear, dog and human back to the main road. They had the horse really overloaded, once I hauled the gear out and packed the trail one guy was able to ride the horse out.
I hooked them up with another hunter who was returning home to give them a ride to civilization. They had to leave the horse tied to a tree. I went back to snowmobiling, rode all the way back to their truck, which was totally FUBAR. Absolutely no way to get the truck out this year, the snow was about 16" at 9000, and the drifts were 3-4.
I rode back to the truck, and saw the horse had gotten loose and walked back up the road the way they just come out about 1.5 miles. Stupid horse must have panicked being alone and followed me. There was no way to bring the horse back, so I drove to civilization and found the guys to tell them where to look for the horse. I felt really bad for these guys. Lost the truck, horse trailer, and maybe 2 horses and tack.
A lesson for all people to learn, be vigilant about knowing the weather, and when you wake up in the middle of the night and find it snowing really heavy, break camp and get out right then, don't wait for morning!!!
