If you want to go way up in northern MN, try the Ash Trail Lodge. They have all the necessary stuff, cabins, great food and a bar. The trail system is one of the best in MN. They are located on John Dee’s Northwood Cams Network.

I second Ash Trail Lodge. Just got back from there on Sunday. Nice cabins and great bar. Tom and his Family are super nice. They donate a couple weekends for the JD ride-in each year. Gonna go up this winter to ride! Awesome place!!!

For a VERY unique experience try the Crooked Lake Resort located where the Trestle Inn bar and resturant sit. (North of Duluth) I've been there twice and I'm here to tell you there nothing quite like it. You're truly in the heart of it! :)

I third ATL. The trails are wide and smooth. The lake trails are also marked and groomed and the scenery is awesome. The ATL crew is great. I have a group booked there in February.

Hungryjacks is nice for Gunflint trail riding, otherwise there are a number of places to stay in Grand Marais that are nice for Northern North Shore riding all the way Down to Lutsen.

If doing the mid-section of the NST and Tomohawk, Crooked Lake near the Trestle INN is awesome.

If Doing the Vermillion area, I would stay on the west side and head North from Cook in terms of riding. There are lots of places to stay since the trails are all connected but the Casino on Vermillion makes for a good time. If East end of Vermillion, Ely Grand Lodge, or rent a cabin. Giants Ridge also has very good accommodations and sits on the Taconite trail.

Crane Lake, North of Vermillion has a great place to stay, the Voyagaire. If staying even further North near Ash-Ka-Nam, you have the Ash trail lodge and serveral other choices on the river there.

Last but not least, consider Grand Portage Lodge and Casino if thinking about hitting the best trails in the state IMO.

Other things to consider where to stay. There are really only a few cities of any size on the IRON Range/North Shore. Grand Marais and Lutsen have the most to offer on the North Shore while Virgina/Eveleth is your largest city on the Range. Places like Ash Trial and Hungry Jacks are remote and offer a very serene setting so if quiet and relaxing is what you want, they are a great choice. More nightlife, bars, restaurants are available in Grand Marais and around Virginia.

I've ridden up there for 25 years and don't proclaim to be an expert, but in my experience, you can get the best of both worlds anywhere North of Duluth and have a great time either soaking away the miles in peace, or taking on the town.

PS: As a former Duluthian, I would offer this often overlooked option. Duluth has direct access to the North Shore Trail, the Island Lake area trails, and trails to Virginia. It makes for a great place to ride out of as well and still has some bigger city ammenities.

Amo offers some great suggestions and I agree with all of them. Another area to look at is the Silver Bay/Finland area. Thats where our cabin is and I think it's the best riding in the state. You can run the gamut for places to stay, in Silver Bay there's the Mariner (inexpensive) and the American Inn (moderate). In Beaver Bay you have Cove Point (spendy). In Finland you have the Maple leaf or the Wildhurst has cabins. The wildhurst bar is a great place to unwind. Crooked Lake Lodge would be a great place. There are also several hotels in the Two Harbors area you can ride out of.

If your still looking i have a vacation home located 5 miles south of cook. It is just off 53 on hwy 1. I will be renting it all year. it is a 3 bedroom home with 3 queen beds and one full. Full kitchen and a HD TV. If you would like you can see it on homeaway.com click on vermilion location look for the Eagles place. If this is in your area it would be to have you.

I gotta say Crooked Lake too! You can ride any direction outta there and the owner has some excellent fire road maps if you ask nicely! It's quite any experience to say the least. I would suggest the wood burning cabins!
