regular switch retards timing. if you dont know what youve got,or you question it at all,go with the regular setting. IMHO

I talked to my dealer about this when I bought my 09 RMK 800. The plug should be apart if you use anything but NON-OXYGENATED fuel. In Minnesota, everything at a regular gas pump has ethanol in it, so it's oxygenated. You'd have to get it special from somewhere. I don't know what other states do for use of ethanol, but in MN, any regular pump, whether 92 premium or 87 regular unleaded, it needs to stay unplugged. In fact, they told me not to bother paying the higher price for 92, the 87 gives me the same result without hurting the engine.

I'd think if you have any oxygenated fuel in the tank, you should leave it unplugged. So if you want to use the good stuff, make sure to use up what's in there first.

Follow the owners manual. The motor was built for premium. the switch is for when you only can get 87 octane. Don't go cheap. So what if it costs a buck more to fill the tank. what does a rebuild cost? My Mercedes took premium do you think I put regular in it? NO. Sold it. lol Stay clear of ethanol.

michaeladams- my advice above was assuming you have a liberty engine/edge chassis. that being said,if you run regular gas with the key switch in prem. you run a high risk of detonation, which we all know will cause serious engine damage.

I'm in Michigan and I always used premium and on the premium setting. I've consistantly gotten 10 Mpg. My buddy swore up and down it's a waste of money to buy premium. (He is very CHEAP and I usaully see him pay because of it) Anyway So he convinced me, So I put Regular in and about 70 miles into our ride when we stopped for gas, OUCH! I had only gotten 7 Mpg and I also was getting 500 rpm less on my top end.
Do your own test and then go which ever way you want.
I want every ounce of performance from my sled I can get.

michael - what sled are you running? Like I said, if you have one of the new ones (mine is a 2009), the plug is up by the clutch cover. And this plug (not like the old style sleds with a switch), is used when you have unoxygenated (no ethanol) gasoline. regular or premium unleaded doesn't impact the use of this plug.

Again, this is all per my dealership service guy. I'm not an expert. Best to read the book (which I should do!).

Zepher gas has no alcohol in it. Most other gasoline has it. Manual states premium gas or regular gas referring to octane rating..and says that up to 10% alcohol gas is okay. PRE detination is similar to spark knock and that can cause harm to any engine. Use the switch only if you are sure you have fresh gas, and the octane level of the gas is high enough to gain the 6 or 7% more go-power the advanced spark will provide.
