As we all know, riding in the lower 1/2 of the state of Wisconsin is iffy at best.
For those who don't usually trailer to find snow, how much foreseeable riding time do you need before you go through the process of buying the $30.00 resident or $50.00 non-resident trail pass to legally ride in WI.?
I know many folks that are in a club will have their $10 permits in hand.
This poll is geared towards those who wait til their local trails open or lakes/rivers freeze up.

I have not purchased a WI permit last year or this year since conditions dictate I must drive to MI from Green Bay, WI to ride.
I had to chuckle last week when I was at the Howard, WI DNR office registering my boat and saw two large postings on the front door stating something to the effect WE DO NOT SELL WI SNOWMOBILE TRAIL PERMITS, GET'EM FROM YOUR CLUB. To me it meant to the many who already showed up at the DNR; "don't come in here and waste our time". I laughed and thought this whole process is wacked, just add the trail permit price onto the cost of the registration you IDIOTS!
It's like the whole DNR Deer Hunting debacle of the early 2010's.

I don't know why I bother, always end up in UP anyways. 3years and can count on one hand how many times rode in Wisconsin.

You should add a selection of buy one pre season no matter what. Just to see the %

Appreciate the input but the basis of the poll is concerning those who probably don't think much about the sled(s) they have til the snow falls.
I think that makes up at least 50% of registered sleds in WI who in the past could just fire up and ride once registered.

snowbuilder, I know this doesn't answer your pole but just thought Id put my input in too, haven't rode in this state once in last 5 years so I wont invest in the trail permit, all riding done in U.P. and Joined a club in the U.P. as well.

Quick hijack;

Do we need to buy a trail permit in WI if the sled is only on rivers or lakes with no marked or maintained trail on them?
Sled is registered, just dont have a trail permit yet.

If I could like this post 1000 times I would. Especially the last sentence ending in IDIOTS!
What a bunch of bureaucratic fools for making this process so labor intensive. Add it ALL together in one fee!!!

No, only needed if operating on trails or corridors.

I bought my $50 out of state permit in Iron River in November while I was passing through. Mostly to see if it was still possible to do. We will be taking 5 or 6 guys out in Feb and I wanted to see if we needed to call ahead for trail permits. There is so much confusion now where it used to be simple. I still didn't get the permit you stick on the windshield - just a piece of paper that says I paid. Permit to follow in 5 business days. Which is also stupid. I got my sticker and I will stick it on my sled before I go but the guys that buy it on the way out will not have the sticker while we are actually sledding. They will just have the piece of paper. Which gives the DNR a reason to pull us over. It doesn't really matter much any more to us because we are not all boozed up anymore as we are old geezers. But it is still stupid. It used to be quite straightforward. Not a factor in your local poll but just wanted you to know an out-of-stater's take on the process. It is stupid. Did I say it was stupid? What kind of fools do you have running things that made it this stupid?

Grub - the people running the DNR are a bunch of control freak, idiots, trying to put their hands on everything. Walker weeded some of the stench out of the department, but there's so many it's nearly impossible.
This CAPSTEP program lobbied by the AWSC was effective, although misguided, so this was at the heart of it all.
Nevertheless, I do blame Walker for allowing this to happen, despite the many good things he's done, he dropped the ball big time on this one. I made a call to his office last year and got no response.
I wouldn't blame one person for attempting to ride without a sticker. I haven't seen DNR on the trail for 3 years. Roll the dice.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was unaware, yet many folks will ride the trail to get to the frozen waterway.

How you gonna ride the trails to the river if the trails arent open? Im 1 mile from the Rock River, and the trail is 1/4 mile from my house, but its been open for 3-4 days in the last 3 years... The ditches are a no go too.

Luckily theres a place to park my truck and trailer right at the river.

Cheap drinks all up and down the river too......haha
