Portage Ice Not Safe for Snowmobiles

When I was there 2 weeks ago, there was a packed down highway on the west side of the bridge and I saw dozens of sleds go across. This guy must have wandered off to the side or something.

This group were running down the middle of the canal from what appears to have from Chassell. This years ice is definitely not conducive for riding, too many temp swings along with wet heavy snows as well as rain & rain mixed with snow. Think about it, 140 plus inches of snowfall in 5 1/2 weeks doesn't bode well for ice making. As far as the bridge mat not being down, that is simply no excuse for running the waterway, it's just too iffy.-Mezz

why isn't the mat down?

MI DOT is doing work on the bridge and it needs to be raised and lowered periodically. It is very well balanced and thus the extra load of the mat and snow would not allow them to lift it.

John or others, so what are we running on going over the bridge? Concrete or the grate? Is a safe alternative running the ice on the West side of the bridge from the Ramada to the RV park?

You will cross about a 150 foot section of metal grate. The rest is snow covered ground under the bridge. Here is a video I did of the crossing without the mat down last year. Piece of cake and no damage done. I was on a brand new sled to boot.
