MDOT US-41 Portage Lake Lift Bridge Rehabilitation

Click → MDOT US-41 Portage Lake Lift Bridge Rehabilitation project:
Start: December 2014, End: April 2016

How Will Traffic Be Affected?
Bridge traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction for most of the project lifespan.
A 10-hour nighttime closure is planned for Jan. 17, 2015.
An 11.5-hour nighttime closure is planned for March 21, 2015.
Sixteen 2-hour nighttime closures are planned: January 2015 to April 2015.
Approximately 200 15- to 20-minute daytime and nighttime closures are planned: December 2014 to April 2016.
More information may be found in this (click →) MDOT publication (pdf pformat)
which says (in part):
Traffic impacts (continued)
• • •
Sept. 15- Dec. 15, 2015
• Maintain pedestrian traffic
• Maintain snowmobile traffic

And still more from the project engineers, Modjeski and Masters, (click →) Portage Lake Lift Bridge Rehabilitation, quoted here in part:

… To successfully accomplish this, M&M engineers proposed that replacement take place during winter months when the bridge can be left in the fully lowered position, with traffic maintained on the upper deck. This would also help to accommodate snow mobile traffic which commonly uses the lower deck during the same season. …

....A 10-hour nighttime closure is planned for Jan. 17, 2015....

Just wondering why they would schedule this on one of the busiest weekends for snowmobiles and right after Mi Tech returns from Christmas break.

If the cold stays in place it won't matter, everyone will just shoot across the lake anyway.
