We are heading up on Saturday for the week. Staying in Presque Isle. Has anyone been riding in that area? What are the trails like? Appreciate any info. Thanks!

I left there on Tuesday and it was ridable then but very thin and brown. Trail 6 (east/west) was better than Trail 1 (north to MI). Lots of small rocks pinging off your skis on all the trails. All the swamps were frozen and they are expecting a little warm up mid-week which should not thaw things too much.

They simply need 6"-12" of new snow and it will be much improved.

Have fun and be safe. And a spare set of carbide is a good idea.....

I’m here right now as I type this. This post is spot on. If you are looking for perfect conditions, this is not the place. It’s not bad riding. Your carbides will be very noisey. If you’re not fussy, come on up. We’re heading to the Keweenaw tomorrow and I know the conditions will be much better. I’m looking so forward to that.

I’ll second that post! PI would make a great launch point heading North, last week a quick 30mn ride north gained almost a foot of snow on the ground, 45 north in Ironwood there had to be 3-4’ in places! John Dees forecast for the area later this week looks very promising, fingers crossed!

Spare carbides a good idea. We ruined 3 skis. I blame the low snow closer to Minocqua and the grade north of Mercer though. We had a good ride across from Lando to PI. Lots of gravel and rocks mixed up in the snow from Manitowish to Boulder and on east. There are some trails that are really good even down by Minocqua, but also just as many that have gravel and snirt pretty bad. The clubs are doing a real good job filling in holes and keeping groomed. They just need snow. I can’t believe I wore off a wear rod, probably smacked it on a rock, then wore the ski down. The same for my buddies ski. My left ski was worn thru up on the side keel. It still had a carbide. We probably took a few thousandths off the hyfax too. I’d say out of the 480 miles we had a hundred that were poor. The rest were great.

I have ruined a ski, twice, on the grade from Manitowish to Mercer. I think this is 17, but I rarely ride over that way. Seems like that one section is pretty wind swept and the gravel is really abrasive. It doesn't take much to grind carbide and skis down. I usually take the J trail from Winchester up to Mercer and avoid the grade section. A bit of a tight trail but more fun.
