Primary to Secondary clutch adjustment

I have a 1990 Yamaha Phazer. I pulled the engine recently for repair. The engine is now back in the sled and running good. I have been destroying drive belts now. I believe my problem is clutch alignment. Does anyone know the center to center distance between the primary and secondary clutches? Is there anyway manually to check the offset of the two clutches?

Your going to need a clutch alignment tool specific to your sled. If you cant buy one in the aftermarket then you may have to go to the dealer for one. Back in the day you removed the belt and opened the secondary enough to drop a steel rod in and then let the sheaves pinch it and hold it in place and extending over the primary so you could check for parallel and measure proper offset given by the manufacturer (or somebody elses sled). Distance center to center should be close but not as important as offset. Run the machine on a stand and after reving it up and then returning to idle should place the belt flush or just slightly raised above the secondary sheaves.

Still works no need for special tools, just think it out and do it.
Get the center to center from your dealer.
subtract 1/2 crank diameter and 1/2 jack shaft diameter and cut a 1/4 inch
rod to that length, keep in in the drawer with your other measuring tools for future use.

I have used a piece drill rod before also. I you have a surface plate roll your rod on it for true-ness. Make sure it's not bent or bowed. Your secondary should float a little also.

secondary should float a little also. no more than 1/8 inch. The secondary is slower to respond than the primary and it will suck the belt sideways and eat the edges away.
