Time to sign up again for the pre-buy for propane for this winter. What prices are being quoted in different areas now.

I just got a pre-buy contract from Ferrelgas in the Madison area for $2.099/gallon filling their tank. Each year I have to call around to get them to a realistic number. I just contracted for the cabin where I own the tank for $1.639 (Stephenson Marketing Coop).

How long will 500 gallons of propane last?

Depends. In my 3400 sq. ft. house, I only went through 200 gallons over 13 months, March 1, 2009 - April 1, 2010.

300 Gallon fill price is $1.24/gallon in Waupaca, WI. L&L Propane.

Hmmm my 3600 sq. ft. house will probably burn about 600-700 gallons December to December & I have a 1000 gallon tank. I'm a lot further north than you but no idea if my useage is conservative or not keep her at 67 degrees but when that sun swings west we get hot. I also burn a lot of wood in the fireplace stove insert. Just curious.

That is the same amount of propane that I go thru. My cabin is about 3200 sq. ft. When we are not there we set the thermostat at 55 degrees and also have the hot water heater wired to a switch so we can easily shut it off when we leave. The windows are old so we lose some heat there. I sure wish I could get down to 300 gallons but I know that won't happen.

Also LP hot water heater & dryer. I have Pella windows & doors through out & installed inside insulating windows. House is somewhat new about 10 years old. But same as you I don't know what else I can do to conserve on LP use & sounds like probaably not that bad since you turn yours down to 55. Thanks for info.

My windows are 30 years old. In fact I joke that I have no need for a carbon monoxide detector because I probably have enough fresh air coming in thru the windows that there is no need for one. However the windows are staying for the time being because a new roof is at the top of the list for now. I don't see putting new windows changing the amount of LP use buy too much. Yes it should help but not by 100's of gallons.
