Question for the other techs out there

Working on a 87 340 enticer withan ignition problem. It runs, but the spark is intermittent, checked with an auto type timing light. The engine stumbles in time with the light flickereing on both plug wires. Any experience with a similar problem? I have a theory, just trying to get some other input. Also, if anyone has the specs for the coils (ohms) let me know. Thanks, Jim

Try the simple things first I.E. Kill switch, key switch & all connections (it's over 20 yrs old!) Also the plug wires themselfs.

All systems isolated, secondary coils are fine. Yes its old, but this thing is showroom new, less than 100 miles on it. Owned by an older guy, only used it for ice fishing. I cant believe how good this looks, even the engine bolts are gold colored yet (cad plating). Would have great vintage value to someone. Too bad the current owner is letting his kids destroy it around the house.

X2^^ Had same sled, same prob. Dont remember how we fixed it. (9yrs ago).Throttle safety switch? I remember having to change one on one of my kids sleds. Try unpluging it and see if that helps.

TORS system disabled, although the symptoms are very similar to a faulty TPS. Very eradic idle until it warms up for a minute. The ignition actually cuts out for a few revolutions, then catches again. Tried a different coil assembly w/ caps, no change. Thinking maybe the CDI has issues. Thought maybe the generator coil was not producing current at pull rope RPM, but they usually get worse with heat, not better... Any more ideas?

I'm sure you checked all the plug in connections but just thought I'd mention it. The only other thing I would check is the ground wiring or try an alternate ground. Other then that Replace the CDI box.

Those old yamis run forever. You sound more mechanical than me, but i would bet its something really simple. Something elec.wet. Wire shorting out, etc. Ours went through two sons and believe me they tryed to kill it.

Cracked shielding, or wire, in the stator is one thing to try. Check for an open circuit, or grounded, in the ign windings cold and hot.

It was the charge coil under the flywheel. The ohms test was just slightly low, but that was enough to cause the weak spark, New coil, fat blue spark and fires on the first pull. Thanks for your input on the diagnosis. Jim

I meant to post earlier, glad to hear you got it running. I bet the kids are having a ball.
