Question for Wisconsin Deer Hunters

Is it true that they are eliminating "registration stations" next year? How does that make you feel? Isn't part of the tradition showing off your trophy "with the guys," telling your story, and seeing what other guys are bringing in? Or maybe it's just an inconvenience? I used to stop by a place near Whitewater lake and watch the deer come in, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and I don't even hunt.

Registering in my opinion, is just an inconvenience as we cut up our own deer. Now we have to load it and drive to town. Then back to cut it up. Online or over the phone will be a much better option. I actually think it may be more accurate. I know some people that don't bother registering now and just proceed to cut it up. Illegal? Yes. But being done.

Personally I don't like it as I am a traditionalist at heart (I still wish Polaris made a sled for my style of riding). I too used to look forward driving to the registration station to watch the deer come in and talk to the guys and gals and listen to the stories. You could see and FEEL the excitement as they explained what happened. I remember back in the mid 90's when I shot what I call my "TV buck". At the registration station about six Asian guys came over and we talked for about 30 minutes about our hunts that day. I had heard that These folks hunted and were really into it, but I had never saw or met one until that day.

It's a memory that I'll never forget! It's sad that the opportunity for more memories made at the registration that will never have the chance to happen.

Yep. The cyber world is going to be. The DNR is finally simplifying things to make the hunt easier and better (in my opinion). Online registration, I'll take it or leave it, but it will make things easier. If bragging rights is what you're after, then just leave the tailgate down, drive to several taverns and talk it up.

I ran into the then Secretary, Scott Hassett at a Barneveld registration station. He was my attorney when I was the Treasurer for Walleye North American. My son was totally enamored to see the head man in the field, yucking it up with the boys.

Wisconsin is not eliminating registration stations next year, but are adding the option for everyone to be able to register deer online or by calling in. You can still register a deer by bringing it to any participating registration station next year if you want to .

After tagging the deer in the field prior to transporting it (same rules still apply for that), rather than having to drive it to a registration station, it will be much more convenient to just call it in. Also, when in a crunch for time, you won't have to worry about the registration station being closed if you recover the deer late at night, etc. I am in favor of the WI adding these additional registration options.
