Random Thoughts from a Cluttered Mind

It's the end of the season for me. Heck, it never got started. Along about the middle of February I conceded the season lost. Then a late winter storm provided my first and last ride of the season with two weekdays of low traffic and groomed trails in northern Wisconsin. Outstanding!

I believe that I was the only snowmobiler in North America that wasn't riding in the Keweenaw Pennisula this winter. From what I read the lines were long and the tempers were short. That'll happen when you compress all those people, good & bad, into a small area. Rude behavior is nothing new to our sport but this past year seemed to be the High Water Mark. Even the John Dee website had it's share of Back Biting and Flame Throwers. Each year we welcome new members to the family, most behave themselves and yet others are asked to move on by the Mods. It's kind of the same way out on the trails, probably 95% of us are good snowmobilers with the best interest of our sport in mind, it's the small, annoying percentage with the loud mouth, loud pipes, and riding where they shouldn't. My Dad used to say, "You can't fix stupid, so don't waste your time."

From my experience, some things will never change. You'll always meet an idiot on the wrong side of the trail in a blind corner. The cost of a new machine, gear, and trailers are always more than what you planned on spending, but you will anyways. Some of us will go for our first ride, and some us for our last... some winters it will snow, and some winters it will not.

Here's a big Thank You to all the volunteers including the Groomers and Club Members that do the signage, brushing and fund raising. A challenging year to say the least and here's hoping that next season is a better one for all!

One last thought, we all can agree that this was one of the worst winters for snowmobiling in recent memory. Unless this past winter has a twin, it can only get better with the winters to come!

You take care and we'll see you next season!

Great letter-could not have said it better myself. When winter returns, hopefully the negativity shown recently will have been fried by the summer sun. Enjoy summer all!!

Gary,

Really enjoyed reading this. Yeah, it's been a rough ride (literally). The closest thing to this winter that I remember were a couple of years in the late 80's when we truly had "brown" winters in our area. Not a flake of snow all winter. Funny how old people can remember stuff from 20 years back but can't remember where they left their keys 2 minutes ago.

This year was a double whammy in that we were coming off a couple of great snow years and there was every indication that this year would be equally spectacular. The phrase "colder than normal and above normal precipitation" came up again and again from multiple sources.

Early in the year, there was little cause for panic on my part. I mean, my old, far northern MN stomping grounds always has snow, right? I was primed for a New Year's weekend run. Sorry, not this year - nothing but glare lake ice and grass throughout January and February.

On the positive side, we did make a quick MI run and we hit it perfect. Good snow and very few people around at that time. Also, since two of the three sleds never left the shed, there won't be much prep needed next fall. Finally, the extra time allowed me to explore some other sled-related projects that I might comment on later in the spring.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

No doubt there have been too many negative posts, but there have been plenty of good posts helping people with conditions, where to stay, tech help, buying and selling things, pictures of many types, not to mention John's forecasts and journals. To say this is the only positive thing out of this site this year is, well, you decide.

One good thing that came out of this year is my group discovered the Snowies. I was only able to get away for one trip this year, and with the snow conditions in the midwest, we thought we'd see how our short-tracks did in the West. We had a heck of a time out there. Sure it was a long drive and we wish we had a little more track underneath us but we loved every minute of it. The cost worked out too, since the extra gas in the van was more than made up for the less gas we used in the sleds. It takes a little more time of work to go out there but it was well worth it. Everyone told us it was crazy busy out there while we were there, but absolutely no comparison to a typical UP weekend for traffic.

You can definitely tell the snowmobile dealers went all in at the beginning of the winter with the predictions for good snow. They are stuffed with inventory right now. A lot of places have 20 plus sleds available in their inventory including spring orders. So far the biggest discount that I have seen is $2100 off MSRP.

Good and very true post. Maybe i see things differently but it seems a lot of people post issues that are more intended to inform or bring light to an issue and others take it as a "threat" or in a negative manner. Issues like hand signals, trespassing issues, drinking on the trails, etiquette on the trails, etc... I think start out as a good post with some good information and it spirals out of control. Take it with a grain of salt and move on. Thanks gary_in-neenah for a good post and a great way to wrap up the season. I am still hoping for one more quick rise up north, but I already unpacked my boating equipment just in case.

It has been kind of a trying season for snowmobiling, made three early trips to the up, rode the rest in central WI. Got out 27 times, all rides avg 80-100 miles locally, with one 190. Because of conditions, just couldn't tie any long rides into adjoining counties,(Forest & Oconto). Probably the worst ride conditions were on the HOF ride out of St Germain to Lake Gogebic. This has not been the best year, but i've enjoyed it; to be able to ride over 2,500 miles in a bad year is not a bad year in my estimation. See you on the trail.

Well said, Gary!! and Skiroule.

I notice that the judgmental jerks and finger pointing franks stay away from posts like this. What's there to criticize?

This site has given me ideas on great places to ride and lets me know the REAL conditions with GREAT places to stay, helped me find a HOUSE, allowed me to laugh and even edumacated about things I had no clue about. And I've met some really great people who I feel really lucky and blessed to know. There are some whom I've never met but feel like I know already!

We had a great season - and still have hope for one last ride. What do ANY of us REALLY have to complain about? We're still all here! :)

Right there is what makes all of the negativity and attacky crap so easy to ignore! :)

Big Vin had a great post the other day as well, for those of you who didn't get the chance to read it.

Thanks Vin. Based on your post the other day, we're both a couple of Ski Doo 4 Strokers in our prime and I'd be glad to ride with ya!

I'm on a Doo 2s now but could be on a 4s next year....does that count? Can I come too? I met Vin at the JD Ride-in last month, stand-up guy!

I agree, great post, Gary.

Thanks Russ, and we'd be glad to have you join us. If you're considering one of the 1200's, you might get the "monkey arms" from all that torque but you'll be grinning like a dog in the sausage factory!

Gary, very well written. Returning from my season finale. 1800 miles one way to chase snow..........priceless.along with the JDee site member friendships made over the years.
