Record Temps for Feb

So here in S.E Wi we are setting record high day temps the last 2 days and may continue for the next 3. The last 3 winters were crap here and 2014 was a brutal one as far as cold goes. I keep inching to saying maybe winters are changing for good and not going to be like the ol' days. But then I see this chart and thankfully reminds me that weather is just big cycles. Look at the average high for the record setting Feb 135 years ago....... So I will keep my thinking that this is just part of a cycle and not what we should get used to seeing.

Yup, its happened before, it will happen again. We were breaking records set in 1981 this weekend in the Twin Cities as well.

Same story with the rains in California. It's happened before, it will again. Funny though, time frame for both is close. 140 years give or take.

This reminded me of a time in January 2008 when we had ~70 degree weather and it truly felt like summer outside, even had winter tornados reported. Correlation seems to be a La Nina or weak La Nina? I always thought La Nina gave us ample cold and snow, but I guess that's really not always the case. The PDF below is very interesting, talks about the winter tornados in Northern Illinois.

I forgot to add, that the next two years after 1981 were at least two of the top 5 snowiest winters EVER in the Twin Cities, so we got that going for us......

Yes I remember that year well with the tornados. I think in Wisconsin, January is the only Month without a tornado but I could be wrong.

Whoever bought sleds in 1997 or 1998 had to be pissed.

I remember those 2 years, and I did buy a new sled in each 97, and 98. We had to do a lot of spur of the moment trips, but we rode. Several trips turned into somewhat poor conditions by raining instead of snowing. Bummer!!!

Yes, all part of the cycle... Hope the warm cycle is ending soon....
I see high 60's for tomorrow. That will break the all time record high in all of February for Madison, and probably most of state.

Heard talk of being at the peak of a 10 year cycle*. (High temps) supposedly start the downside trend. In 10 years be at the low temp swing. Hope this is true. (*20 year to totally cycle through)

That would be great! I would gladly let this winter end if we knew we had 10 years of cold coming lol...... who knows its anyone's guess. This fall they said it could be a bad winter, and it may have started out cold filled and snowy, from about Dec.22 on its been spring in S.E Wi

yah good one,,,,they're going to predict what the temps are gonna be for 10 years and they can't figure out next week.

Not that they were doing predictions, they were talking about cycles of mean tempertures. Seems to have some basis? 97& 98 would have been the last high temp peak. Although this is just a general observation. I'm not looking over pages of average winter temps to compare. Just off of memory (which mine sucks) and I see a post here speaking of 97 and 98 being warm and rain in winter.

my brain tends to remember the good winters not the bad, I also have the advantage of time off in the winter, to go where the snow is. So even if its bad at home, I usually get in at least a couple thousand miles or more

This is going to be the 6th day of record temps by 5 to 8 degrees where we are located. Just unbelievable for January setting all new records, now again in February by those amounts in degrees and days???
