Red Maple Trees

Anyone else notice that these things are already dropping leaves?

I normally have to scramble to get these raked up before the snow flies. I have lived here since 1993 and have never had this happen and it's not just mine. I took as tour around the area and all of the others are doing the same thing.

Could this be like the falling acorn thing? Maybe another sign of an incredible winter? I don't know but, it sure seems strange to me.

Maple leaves are holding strong here too. Pleanty of wind and rain the last couple of days. The frost tonight should kick the color change in to gear.

Maples are advanced along the evolutionary chain and can sense draught conditions which means that when in a draught, they can drop leaves in an effort to reduce need for moisture.

It's been a dry year in some areas, and not in others....and is likely the cause of the leaf drop in your area.

BTW pines drop needles too in an effort to prevent excess moisture consumption.

Nobody knows why (exactly) leaves start turning early or late....lots of speculation, but still a mystery. Color is there all year and is masked by chlorophyll production but re-appears as production decreases.

Just been really strange that all of them around here seem to be dropping early. Like I said earlier, I've lived in this house since 1993 and have been through many types of summers and it seems like they wait on purpose so we have to scramble and rake while the snow is flying. It was a dry July, but we've had worse and it has been really wet lately.

I'm kind of hoping it's sensing an early start to winter and scrambling to drop now!
