Friday, the public came out to say goodbye to Larry Rubin, the "Father of the Mackinac Bridge."

Rubin passed away last months in St. Ignace. Friday, people gathered at his public memorial service at Bridge View park.

Rubin was the first executive secretary of the Mackinac Bridge Authority. He made many first decisions regarding the bridge and helped get money and supplies to build it. Rubin also helped set up the Mackinac Bridge Museum.

One interesting note: many of us carry a part of Rubin with us. The picture of the bridge on all Michigan driver's licenses was taken from Rubin's porch.

Friday, the Mackinac Bridge Authority announced this year's Labor Day event will be re-named the Lawrence A. Rubin Memorial Bridge Walk. With an honor like that, it's clear: many fondly remember Rubin.

Was thinking about the bridge last week as I went over it, and remember taking the ferry boat over and looking over at that bridge and my dad saying "next year we will drive over this water" as he pointed to the bridge under construction.

Yeah, that makes me older than dirt!

But imagine what life would be like if we had to use a ferry boat today to get up north sledding???!!!

(Yeah, I know...the trails would not have as many dummies on them...that's for sure!)
