Extreme Christmas Day Weather!

Of course, we all have many memories (good and bad!) of past Christmas Holidays!

I am going to take a look at back to back Christmas Days that some of us probably will remember. If you lived in Michigan back in the early 80’s and were old enough to remember, you can probably recall the following!

Way back in 1982, Christmas Day, we had record breaking warmth across Michigan.

I was a junior in high school in Berrien Springs, MI (in SW Lower Michigan) and I remember playing football with friends. It was a very warm day with highs in the middle 60’s. Record breaking heat for the area!

But lets head farther north in Northern Michigan and the Eastern U.P.

On December 25, 1982, here is some of the heat that a few areas experienced. All were record breaking high temperatures for the day!

Sault Ste. Marie……………………….47 degrees
Gaylord………………………………..59 degrees
Traverse City………………………….58 degrees
Cadillac………………………………..54 degrees
Big Rapids………………………….....61 degrees

Sault Ste. Marie had a snow depth of 2” on this date. Other areas had less, or none. Showers and thunderstorms were reported with the mild temperatures!

Just one year later, a total flip-flop...to the extreme!

We had incredible cold. Here were the highs:

Sault Ste. Marie………………………..8 degrees
Gaylord…………………………..…...11 degrees
Traverse City………………………….7 degrees
Cadillac………………………………..8 degrees
Big Rapids……………………………10 degrees

Sault Ste. Marie had a snow depth of 21” on December 25, 1983. Traverse City 10”

In case you are wondering, Berrien Springs has about a foot of snow on the ground with a high around zero degrees. So, instead of playing football with friends, I had to spend time inside with family that day...or clearing the driveway!

If you have any stories from way back that you remember about the weather and your plans, please share them in the feedback section below!

Thank you….and have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
