Remote key/starter for car gets frozen

With the cold weather hitting, my remote wont work in the car and car will not start since it "can not find a key"
if it gets cold. I have to go inside to warm it up for it to work. Does this mean I need a new battery in the remote? Or is this normal? 2014 Ford Edge
