Rhinelander

Have had reservations for this upcoming weekend in Rhinelander. We gonna be ok, or do I need to scramble and look to go somewhere else?

You should be fine, trails really good and some roads just so so, take the good with the bad. Town needs a few inches.

I was up there over the weekend. Trails were poor in spots around town but smooth. They got ALOT better outside of town and in less traveled areas. Parking lots are bare and road trails have minimal snow. The warmup last week hit them bad. I wouldn't cancel the trip. But I wouldn't expect those perfect February conditions.

Thanks for the responses guys. Hoping the little bit of the snow in the forecast helps out. I haven't ridden the Rhinelander area before. Anybody have any tips of trails to take or ones to avoid. Here's a map pic of where we'll be based out of

For what its worth...

It's one thing if it's a large chain hotel, but I would never cancel a reservation to find more snow or better conditions elsewhere. If trails are open and rideable you are expected to show up. Small resorts depend on your reservation, think about how much income they just lost of say they have only have 3 cabins and 1 isn't going to be occupied anymore for the weekend. They don't make the money in the winter and have bills to pay. Besides being in the northwoods is better than being at home!

I hear ya. It's a hotel we're staying at, but we're still gonna roll the dice and hope conditions are worth the 4 hour drive

I have been riding Rhinelander for 20+ years. I never recommend those hotels at 8 and 47 to anyone. Not that they are not nice places to stay just getting on the trails sucks. Yes they are directly on the trails but if you want to go east of Rhinelander you need to cross the 8 bridge right by the hotel that never has snow on it and go on a trail along 8 for miles that's most always **** to end up by Lake George. If you want to north of Rhinelander it is a long loop or you take the trail on the flowage. Next time I would book at holiday acres if you want a hotel. They most always have vacancy's last minute and rooms are about the same price. They are directly on the trail and you don't have to ride any bull**** to get anywhere. As far as where to ride. I would go south towards Gleason or west of Crandon. But snow is kinda thin west. I would avoid Eagle River and St. Germain.

I was in Rhinelander from last Wednesday (the warmest day) until Sunday. It survived the warm up, but was getting thin. If I had reservations starting this Fri, I would keep them. I drove through that area again on Monday night while headed to the UP and it was right around Rhinelander where the precipitation changed to snow. That probably helped some. It's supposed to snow tonight and on the weekend. A couple of inches would do wonders. Our first two days we went north and West. Was ok overall. The worst part as mentioned above, is getting around town and out of Rhinelander. Roads and power lines were the most annoying. Not enough snow to make moguls, though. Plenty of stutter bumps. The final 2 days we headed South and East. That was the ticket. More snow and nicely groomed. Wish we would've found it sooner. Have a good trip.

Just an FYI for anyone else curious.....the trails were fantastic yesterday. put about 90 miles on with the kiddos. Smooth snow covered trails all day/night

I am heading up Friday night for the weekend regardless. Staying at Holiday Acres. Considering bringing the sleds for a quick last ride but don't really want to blow the extra gas bringing a trailer up from Chicago if trails are absolutely horrible.

Hearing mixed reports at this point. Minocqua and Tamahawk say the trails are good after the recent snow but Eagle River is not grooming anymore (says a lot). Rhinelander reports trail conditions haven't changed. Its been colder all week so that helped with any melt off. Trails are supposed to be good "in the woods" but I am more wondering how the "city trail" is. With the trail across lake Thompson closed this season I am wondering if I have to endure 5 miles of poor trails to get to the good ones or what. Good news is traffic sounds non existent.

Im on lake thompson, roads in town as i drove around today looked bad, especially yo get gas. Should be able to head east with little trouble, i hope. Heading out for a quick spin after fishers bar on lake George opens. South and east got more snow towards pelican lake, Antigo I'm hearing. Stark and hiles i bet has plenty of snow-still, my last chance this year. Stay tuned.

Thanks.

Scott one of the groomers said they are not grooming the city trail anymore. Not enough snow to work with. But they are going to try and groom to Three Lakes tonight. Let me know how the trails are. I am most interested if I can make it to Starks via Haymeadow and Melvern fire trail. I think trails will be OK if I can get out of the Lake George area and not have to loop around by Rhinelander.

whats with everyone thinking eagle river doesnt groom? they groom just as much if not more then surrounding clubs when the conditions allow. If you think the trails are always bad there its because of the heavy traffic and prolly time of day you ride them, not the lack of grooming effort from their club.

If you read the recent trail reports Eagle River has suspended grooming until they get more snow. Tells you alot about the conditons. Lake Tamahawk has recently said the same.

Just did 50 miles, followed groomer out of holiday acres caught him at rasmussen road. All very rideable. North of rasmussen through some swamps was marginal until potato fields then very good. Met a couple that said south towards harrison hills was really good. Certainly rideable. Thats what I know.

Thanks for the update!

Enough snow kicking up for cooling?

I was running 127 to 138 on engine. So apparantly yes, ice in corners but flat and fast, mostly white, some grass in corners around power lines and some pine forests were thin, swampy areas not good but short and passable. Most trails were great. My neibhor said south was good, guessing north is good too. Tons of snow in potato fields, busting huge drifts two weeks ago so plenty of fun still to be had. Sent you pm viper.
