Riding 2 up

Heading up to the UP to do a bit of riding and color watching in early Oct. My 2.5 year old loves to ride sitting in front of me around home and I would like to take him on a short trail ride with me up north, no real distance and obviously rather slowly. My question is is this legal? I have heard you cannot ride 2 up on a one up machine but is there an age exclusion for that? Don't want to blatantly break the law but I would really like to let him experience a short ride.

Thanks

You heard right, not legal to ride 2 on a 1 up machine and age has nothing to do with it.

An ORV may not be operated:

* At a rate of speed greater than is reasonable and proper based on existing conditions.
* In a careless manner without due regard for existing conditions.
* In a manner that leaves behind litter or debris.
* To hunt, pursue, or worry any animal.
* While transporting a strung, uncased bow or an uncased or loaded firearm unless:
o The firearm is a pistol (concealed or not) and …
o The person transporting the pistol or carrying a loaded pistol has a Concealed Pistol License or is exempt from the license requirement.
* While transporting or possessing an alcoholic beverage that is open or uncapped (seal has been broken).
* While under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
* While visibly impaired due to alcohol or a controlled substance.
* While transporting a passenger unless the vehicle has been designed by the manufacturer to carry passengers.
* While the operator is under a court suspension of ORV or automobile operating rights.
* When the ORV is unlicensed.

Scott,
If there is a DNR or copp desperate enough to mess with a guy and his 2-1/2 kid, then he don't deserve his/her job. Just have your kid kick him in the shin and move on!!! LOL.

Got stopped earlier this year by DNR. Both my wife and I were riding with our kids. Was given a very stern warning about it. Its too bad because now the wife is afraid to ride and we have not ridden since late June as a family and I will not go out alone.

I have 2 nice quads sitting in the garage now that are just collecting dust.

My advise: Take him for a ride, make sure he has a helmet on. Odds are there should be no problem but if by chance you get stopped be polite and plead ignorance.

Take Sabers advice. Be careful. You know the risks you are taking, but its worth it in my mind. I have rode alot with my kid on, never had a problem but I have never seen a warden out on the trails either.

This past Sunday I was out on the trail and came upon a stopped sxs, the guy walked out the brush as I came by and it was Houghton County Sheriff patrol.

Earlier I ran into 3 people on one ATV but I could not tell if it was a 1 or 2 up. Guy driving, wife riding behind and a young toddler between the drivers legs. The rider had a helmet but no eye protection and it appeared to me he was moving along at a good pace.

You might be careful but there are some crazies out there. I met 3 machines coming at me the other day and they would not slow down at all, they just came speeding towards me and blew by making me take evasive action. The dust from the first one made the 2 behind him hard to see but they made no attempt to slow either. The 3rd one seemed surprised I was about 2 ft from him on the narrow trail, he was just blindly following in the dust.

Also on a trial up near Calumet the other week I approached a big mud puddle and suddenly 2 dirt bikes came racing at me, the first one saw me but never slowed and hit the water puddle spraying me. When I looked back he was looking back to see what he done. What nice guys...

Ride in Wisconsin

Ride in Wisconsin. Just make sure your kids wear helmets!
Wisconsin trails are a lot wider for atvs. So just stay to the right and you should be good to go.
I do love the Mich. trails and have rode double with my kids, never had any issues we have the added seats on our ATVs.

Just use your head. I ride 2 up. 1 adult + 1 child, they might not stop you but 1 adult + 2-4 children on 1 atv you will be stopped and yes I have seen it. My house is on the trail and the trail authority sits by my house. Take your child for a ride.

Had a great trip and my little guy loved it, I can't believe at 2.5 he rode 50 miles with me and was crying when we stopped. Mom was happy that he took a 3.5 hr nap after the ride.

scottb, Thats awesome he made a 50 mile ride with you being so young. Won't be long before he don't wanna ride with dad anymore. Looks like you were on the "P" trail just north of Bergland in the second pic.

Scott b, I wish I could get you to send me one of those pictures with your youngster. I would like to put this on the Mi-TRALE website.

Problem I have is that I am NOT a computer wiz, so you would have to send it to my e-mail address.

if you would just PM me, then I will send you my e-mail address.

That is if you don't mind us posting one of the pictures on our website.

Mi-TRALE is BIG INTO Family Riding. You will see this on our website. One of your pictures with your <3 year old, would be GREAT.

Hopefully it was on the P Trail.
