Ruidoso, NM

O.K., still looking for my next place to call home. I researched and traveled to several parts of Northern AZ, but too many people, but very beautiful. My research has taken me to Ruidoso, NM. Ski and horse racing country, but yet close to dessert. Best of both worlds...winter and summer a few hours drive apart.

Just wondering if anyone has been to this area. Ruidoso/Alto area is sandwiched between Roswell and White Sands NM.

Appreciate any input.

Beautiful country. I have friends that live in Las Cruces so I get out that way quite often to do some exploring. It's kind of high plains territory with some nice mountain ranges mixed in.

I was there in November and it was 70 in the valleys near Alamagordo and traces of snow when we got to the high country to the northeast (towards Roswell). White Sands is cool. They plow that white sand off the roads like it was snow when the wind kicks up.

I was afraid if that, I hadn't been up there in a decade or so. At that time it was still quite rural around Overgaard, at least.

I can't be of much help there either, I've been to White Sands & Alamogordo, and had a friend in Cloudcroft a few years ago, but I never got there. I sure would like to drive through NM on US-70, US-82, US-80, US-285, and a few other routes through the mountains.

Some years ago I flew into Wink, TX, Winkler County Airport (INK) (a great fuel stop about 10-20 miles south of the southeast corner of the state of New Mexico), and took a loaner auto (courtesy car) into "beautiful downtown Kermit, TX" for a bowl o' chili.

Winkler County Airport must be the scorpion capital of the southwest. You had to carry a broom and sweep 'em out of your path by the hundreds on the way from the ramp to the (then) FAA Flight Service Station for a weather check. :)

If you do move to Roswell, then you'll have to host the "Annual JDer's Roswell Investigation", much like this year's "First Annual Paulding Light Experiment"! :D

frnash, last year we traveled to Payson area for a few days. The slow economy has taken its toll on the area, but Pine and Strawberry were very nice communities. Travels also took us to Heber, Overgard, Show Low and Lakeside. Unfortunately Hwy 260 is 'main' street for these towns, so very busy and noisy. Lastly we made our way to Greer, a hamlet in the mountains, but very over developed. Would have been nice to visit this area 20 years ago.

Planning a trip to Ruidoso this fall, hopefully can get back to the Carlsbad Caverns and my favorite ghost town, Colgate NM.

take care, HH
