running hot

Anyone have issues with sled running hot early morning and after sunset? I have a 2011 Apex and couldn't drive 5 miles with out having the temp light coming on. I would dive in some deeper snow and light would go off. After the sun softened up the snow I had no problem. Was running with another apex all day and his light never came on once. Just had a new track put on by dealer and was the 1st trip since new track. Bought sled new and never had light come on before. Made for a long day. Any ideas?

are the lugs the same size? I'm sure scratchers would help=my 2012 rmk drops over 30 degrees when I run my scratchers

Under certain snow conditions - like we have right now - not enough snow gets on the heat exchangers and you will overheat. You can also stick hi-fax in these conditions. That is why ice scratchers were invented. They are cheap and they work. Go get you some.

Your snow flap isn't too short for any reason is it? Sometimes they get messed up from track studs or they get cut shorter for some reason. The snow flap is very important for getting snow up into the tunnel and the heat exchangers.

The snow flap is not altered any from new but they did change the angle and design because people were backing over them and bending the tunnels. That might be why my buddies didn't get hot. I did loosen tge track that morning but didn't help. I think the snow was just to hard and wasn't getting enough snow thrown up on the rear heat exchanger

yep, mpease may have hit it! the flap angle or length can def affect the temp

Well judging by your time of day I would say the trails are too hard when it's cold (morning and evening). You either need studs or scratchers to break up the ice to throw onto the coolers, or you need to stop riding on icy trails.

Just add more heat exchanger on the rear of the tunnel. There is not enough heat exchanger on these sleds...add additional one and watch your issues go away. Add scratchers if you want but the engine needs more cooling than is provided by the small exchangers.

2011 Apex to 2011 Apex both no studs same tracks & your running hot then you probably need to dilute your antifreeze & he is 50-/50. Premium gas also runs cooler but should be using Premium in 2011. You can pull out some antifreeze & add many engine cooler additives from local auto parts store as well. I added some in my 2007 Attak & only over heated 1 or twice in 10,000 miles & only when very cold & snow was super dry. If duplicate sleds you have something going on that your bud does not. Always check coolant level dealer might have spilled some installing new track when he tipped sled. Something is different with your sled.

when your light comes on yellow its telling you your fan on the radiator is running if its red than your to hot and shut it down I've ran mine all day long many many days for last 7 years when light is yellow those yammi motors are tough

Dust is right....yamaha for years has put sleds out with 100% anti-freeze in the coolant system either assuming more is good or just a goof up at the factory.

SO IF YOU OWN A YAMAHA AND YOU GET HOT EASILY, GET A TESTER AT THE AUTO PARTS AND SEE WHAT THE PERCENTAGE OF COOLANT ACTUALLY IS IN YOUR SLED....RUNNING MORE THAN 60% IS NOT NECESSARY IN THE LOWER 48 STATES AND COOLANT BY IT SELF IS A POOR CONDUCTOR OF HEAT so...do yourself a favor and test it. 50/50 is better unless you experience 50 below zero stuff. And the engine will run better and keep the hot light off.
