MILWAUKEE (AP) — Bob Uecker, the voice of his hometown Milwaukee Brewers who after a short playing career earned the moniker “Mr. Baseball” and honors from the Hall of Fame, has died. He was 90.

The team announced Uecker died Thursday morning, calling it “one of the most difficult days in Milwaukee Brewers history.” In a statement released by the club, Uecker’s family said he had battled small cell lung cancer since early 2023.

“Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present, never allowing his spirit to falter,” the family said.

Uecker was best known as a colorful comedian and broadcaster who earned his nickname during one of his numerous appearances on Johnny Carson’s late night show.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Uecker signed his first professional contract with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and reached the majors in 1962. He’d last six seasons in the big leagues as a backup catcher, finishing with a .200 average and 14 homers.

He won a World Series ring with St. Louis in 1964 and also played for Atlanta and Philadelphia.

“Career highlights? I had two,” he often joked. “I got an intentional walk from Sandy Koufax and I got out of a rundown against the Mets.”

Will really miss listening to him call game especially on a nice Sunday afternoon floating around on the pontoon. RIP Bob!

Bob Uecker was one of the greats!! Even though I live in northern IL. on the border, I have been a true blue Brewer fan since 1979. Growing up a cub fan and dropping them in 79. One of the best things I ever did. Took a lot of crap from all my cub fan friends. A friend of mine got to be friends with Gorman Thomas when he played for the crew and the rest you can say is history. In 82 got to go to the series in county stadium. They came so close. Very sad day to say the least .Tonite is a snowmobile club meeting for me, I will be doing a shot of "Jack" and a "Lite Beer from Miller!!"in his honor. I would have to say losing Bob from the crew is kinda like losing John to this site over a year ago. I hope they are both in a great place. R.I.P. :(

I just watched Major League last week, good movie, & Bob was a highlight as the broadcaster for the Indians as he was in all 3 of the Major League movies. I recall seeing him several times on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as well, funny guy & very likeable. RIP Bob.

Glad you posted this Gary. Ueck lived in my neighborhood off of Pilgrim Rd. in Menomonee Falls and he was one of my customers when I delivered the Milwaukee Sentinel between 1982-88. He lived in a nice ranch home in the neighborhood but nothing extravagant at all. Was a man of pretty pretty modest means, you would never envision him living in this house. I remember he'd be washing his harley in the drive way and on the gas tank it had a baseball custom painted on it with flames coming off the ball,,, sailing over an outfield fence. Later in the mid 90's he moved to a large home in the Falls on North Hills Country Club golf course.
Every friday after school or saturday morning's I'd collect the paper route money. He was as nice and funny as everyone knew him in public. I collected money from his wife more than him but in them 6 years I must of saw him 100 times or more.
I don't think he knew my name,, I prolly told him at one point. He always called me young man. He'd be like,,, hey young man you looking for money today? Or hey young man,, what you say today. Always young man he'd say. One day he gave me the best compliment,,, he says,, young man you are the best paperboy we've ever had here, my paper is always in my door by 4;30am.
We'd make small talk for a few minutes about being in high school or whatever was going on at the time. Was just an down to earth normal older guy to me at the time that tipped very nicely.
RIP Ueck.

His 18 minute retirement speech is basically a stand up comedy routine.
He's got hall of famers on stage wiping tears from their eyes it's so funny.

Yeah, well, jake that 82 series sure was soooo close. I became a fan while they were the expansion Seattle Pilots. They then became the Milwaukee Brewers. Out of all of the 'Harvey's Wallbangers' good old days great players, 'Stormin' Gorman Thomas is my all time favorite!

RIP Bob Ueuker! You will always be missed, well remembered, and never forgotten! Peace to all who morn.
