Are you planning on registering it? If so,go dnr.wi.gov and enter the dollar amount you paid wink wink and it will calculate the amount of sales tax you need to pay. If you sold a wisconsin registered sled and are registering the new to you sled they allow what amounts to be a trade in allowance. i have always done it on-line and its super easy, you can even print a temporary card.. Good luck hope this helps

Yes, when you register the sled they will ask what the price paid was.
You will pay on the price paid if you are honest ;)

Heres a question: when buying a new sled in Mich the dealer claims he needs to charge sales tax even though I will register in Wisconsin. I looked it up and what he claims is correct. This only applies between Mich/Wis. What are your thoughts?

Minisoda also now makes you leave tax money behind when making a purchase there unless it is for Ag use OR you have it delivered across the state line,.....otherwise they will nab you for up to 8% depending on where you buy due to county tax add ons etc.

At one time we sold a sled to a relative and he did not have to pay the tax because it was done between relatives. I don't know if that is still true but it was about 5-6 years ago. Worth checking into. Yes we were from WI at that time.

I did this same thing, just said it was a gift, and they said "Ok", no tax paid. They never verified who it came from either.

Or the price paid if you are not honest, if you catch my drift. Shame shame.
I have never had to worry about that. I have never bought a used sled. I just know that I have received a call from the DNR on a sled I sold asking what price I sold the sled for.

I have done just the opposite. The Wis. dealer knew I was hauling it back to MI. He did not charge me sales tax. Michigan said, Pay up! we want our money we charge tax if we are connected to the state you bought it from. If I went to Iowa and hauled it back they would not of charged me sales tax, so they said at the Ionia, MI Sec. of state office.

I have also done the same thing. You can "gift" between relatives. Just write "Gift" in the purchase price box on the carbon copy forms. I would not suggest pushing the envelope on this though. IRS will haunt you if you're caught. I have done it legitimately between my dad and I.
