SANCTIONED off trail riding

Just wondering....for those who are actively involved in clubs, why the midwest has not found areas open to off trail riding, to mix with the trail riding....

Seems like off trail is big out west, but no attempts made to clear approval for some "play" areas where you can go for miles, off trail?

Anybody ever ask that question before??

Seems like a no brainer with the ever increasing interest of off trail riding.

National Forests.

Each designated forest has it's rules posted on their website. Remember though that National forests are made up of not only GOvernment owned land but also private and commercial. Know the rules of the forrest and get a map and gps and have at it!

I see that Iron County Wisconsin is promoting boondocking...they are even providing maps that indicate all the areas that you can ride off trail. See the hurleywi.com website.

whats the point of having a designated boondocking area if everyone knows about it? Thats half the fun finding the area on your own, and having fresh powder that hasn't been all tracked up to play in. IMO

It would be a great money maker for the state. Kinda like Silver Lake for the ATV crowd. I would not use it. It would be great for the big city folks who don't know any different. State can sell "Off trail permits for the areas they set aside. Problem with this is we could lose the areas we ride for free. It would take huge tracts of land in snow belt areas. I heard rumor that thousands of acres south of Gogibic area is going to this. Not the best location but may take preasure off other areas that are great.

So Tyler Fisher its great to ride on fresh unmarked powder but you could be part of the problem if you do not know who owns the land. Its good Iron county has opened it atleast people they they can ride there legaly. This is better for boondocking then going where you do not know who owns it.

As mentioned, National Forests.

Yes, there is private land mixed in them, but they are usually pretty obvious, and not so easily accessable (At least the places I ride).

Sanctioned? That'd be pretty tough to do. Snow is not like the sand dunes of the south west, where the wind whips them back into shape over night.

A couple of years ago there were a bunch of idiots from Wisconson by our camp in the UP. Their off trail riding consisted of running over all of our no trespassing signs on our property, I wanted to bust the windows out on their trucks but I held myself back.

There are areas to ride off trail and it is perfectly ok for the public, I have one area in particular that I ride in where many miles can be put on. Of course I won"t say where it is.

I am always tempted to try this off trail boondocking stuff y'all speak of, it sounds like fun. When I consider doing it two things pop into my head; 1. Im not supposed to be venturing off the trail. I just envision someone someone coming out of nowhere and ripping me a new one or dnr tickets. 2. My short track rental is going to get buried and or ill hit a tree or rock. Shoot we've been coming up for years now and I have always wanted to try "carving." How deep does the snow have to be before leaning her over?

A shorty only needs about a foot of snow to carve. You will want at least two feet. Buried, rocks, trees, rivers without a bridge and culverts add to the fun. You should go with an experienced person (who has the proper equipment) and to help keep it legal. Try the Guide group found in the directory at bottom left. Please DO NOT just wing it. The last thing we need is you tresspassing. I started out trail riding (first 35 yrs.) that evolved into ditch banging during thay time. The last 5 yrs. has been 90% off trail. I find it much safer. The trees are not drunk.

In the short 7 years I have been sledding I have yet to venture off the trail for fear of trespassing, I'm not about to start.

Plus the group I go with is more concerned with making it to the next destination with everything God and the rental shop gave them than smashing up their sleds on rocks and trees and rolling down creek banks etc. Still sounds like fun, especially finding some powder to rip in!

Now you got my blood pumping. (I need that now and then). find a very frozen lake with alot of snow on it to start with and move up from there. For ditch banging, Let me warn you about culverts, assume every drive has one. A ski in a culvert will stop you dead.

HAHA. Yeah man I always wonder about how much fun it would be finding a culvert! We had just started off last year going down the side of a road to get to the next trail, all of us like ducks in a row going single file when all of a sudden a local boy passed us ridding side saddle just throwing that sled all over that ditch and hoping driveways like it was nobody's business!. That dude was in complete control and having a blast and making it look so easy. Later on we were talking about it and how bad it would suck to hook a culvert and that he must have known every inch of that ditch! I guess the only good thing about only going once a year is that seeing stuff like that really makes an impression and gives you something to talk about later. And don't even try to get me out on a lake! If you think I'm leery about trespassing you think I'm gonna risk meeting my icy doom lol!

Hey Indiana, you gotta let your hair down man. Ditch bangin is a blast. The whole thing about it is you gotta know the ditches your in, or at least take a slow ride through so you can get an idea of what is along your path. Ride the lakes the same way. If it's nice and flat, then let er fly! I love Lake Gogebic. 22 miles of 70 to 80mph of cruising. Now get out there and bang that ditch!

If I came upon a trail that crossed a lake I would do it. Oh don't get me wrong I'm a wild man, I once opened my eyes as we crossed the Big Mac bridge. JUST ONCE THOUGH!!!
