Seasonal businesses and stop signs

There are numerous seasonal business along Highway 70 in Eagle River that clearly are not open in the winter, the driveway hasn't been plowed, no tire tracks and building dark. Why do they insist on having a stop sign placed at their driveway where the trail crosses. It just frosts me to have to stop when you know darn well there is no chance of a vehicle. Why don't they just have the trail boss put up a drive way ahead sign or a caution sign? They have the choice and they make us stop. I try not to patronize any of those businesses as they don't support the trail system either.

they love the signs cus no one stops anymore so they can give em tickets. i stopped at all signs and police had to skip em to catch up to me cus i dont look back when alone, they needed to see registration but funny they can skip em to catch a person acutally stopping at all of em. but around here you know no one stops anywhere anymore. and if they do its in middle of road cus the oh crap poped in there head. i have been stopping at next trail crossings to warn people cus dnr and police are everywhere up here and they are using that to check for owi's.

its been brought up before,...basicly when you ride where the popo is settin up a donut shoppe,...you better have your head on a swivel and stop .
Then find out what club is in charge of that areas trail markings and pitch a fit to them....While on trail 2 between watersmeet and IR I see alot of yields instead of stops.

I think the clubs are bound by rules that require the marking of
any vehicular crossing as part of their funding.
Also you know they would be sued if a hot dog turned in
with his jacked up 4X4 and a sledder was hit at a non marked drive.

In this neck of the woods, the DNR actually wants the clubs to put a black garbage bag over any stop signs that pertain to drives that are not being used in the winter. Their thinking is that all the false stops will cause someone to get sloppy and blow through a real one and cause a problem. I do not know what the case is in WI, but the way we have been told to do things up here makes a lot of sense.

I have always thought that it would make more sense to only mark the needed stops for that exact reason. There are a few that have not had a vehicle through in years and they still have the signs in place. I know of one that we have probably crossed over a hundred times.:(

I am guessing the properrty owner has a choice. There are many drive way crossings that have "Caution Driveway Ahead" or similar signage and no stop signs. Thats why I find it annoying to have to stop at these driveways that aren't used in the winter. And John, I agree with you comment. It's almost like the boy that cried wolf one too many times. I get so sick of the constant stopping around town that I get a little sloppy at the some of the stop signs and don't fully stop.
