Seney/Grand Marais

Rode this area 1/12-1/13. Most of the time I rode we were off trail, but overall there is plenty of snow in the area. However, what was surprising, some of the trails were pretty rough with whoops which is not what I have usually experienced in this area in the past, especially the crazy 8 area. On Saturday morning in particular, I was on the trail around 6 AM. Between Seney and Grand Marais, I did not run into a single sled on my way north, but did see two groomers. The trail condition was not much different between and after the groomer. IMHO, but will state I have never groomed a mile in my life, it appeared the groomer may have been going too fast or not cutting deep enough (which may be due to not deep enough snow), to cut down the whoops. I spoke with my brother who is a groomer, and believes more than likely speed is the issue as well. Essentially, riding before and after the groomer, the whoops were still there, just smoothed out. The only other possibility would be with the rain in the area, did previous whoops freeze, and are rock hard and can't cut them down. Again, not an expert here, so I could be off on what I was seeing.

Grand Marais was maxed out with riders this past weekend! It was crazy busy and the trails were a little rougher than normal for them. After being run off the trail several times by the crazy high speed idiots on the wrong side of trail we decided to quit for the day. This area seems to be getting more crazy every year. Through no fault of their own GM ran out of gas for several hours and left sleds stranded at the pumps!

From the Seney Club report yesterday...

We groomed Trail 43/8 last night. Groomed out nice, some corners are a little thin on snow. Came up on a bad accident on trail 8, you guys and gals need to try to ride within you’re means. Speed was a contributing factor for sure.

Trail 431 was groomed as well, mainly flat but getting thin in the corners, there are a few deep holes south of the bra tree, it’s gonna take some more snow and a little more magic from our groomer operators to fix this issue so please slow down on this section of the trail!

Wow, the longest gas line of sleds I have ever seen; gotta buy a Doo to skip GM and keep riding to Paradise.

Wait for gas and rough trails even after the groomer just passed, Just confirms why I do not ride on weekends, too many snowcross wanabe's. My other issue is the cidiots that come up to go full speed on the wrong side of the trail and sometimes head on to other riders then point to move out of their way??? or find a clearing & off trail but go back and fourth across the groomed trail, grab a handfull and cut ruts crossways on the groomed part with no regard that there might be someone actually riding in the groomed trail coming at them where they decide to cross. These are the same people that bitch about how the trails suck because they are rough. Just had to vent on this, happened to us several times last Thursday. I am all for riding fast and off trailing but please guys be careful when coming back on or crossing a groomed trail. Think of the trail like its a road or a highway, would you go do doughnuts on the side of the road in your truck and just cross or re enter the road without looking for oncoming traffic?, Would you just stop in the middle of the highway to talk to your buddy? On a curvy road would you drive as fast as you could & take all the inside corners into oncoming traffic? Think about it. Again maybe this is not the place to bitch about this but I am sure lots of you other riders have experienced this problem and understand where I am coming from. Ride safe, ride far & stay right.

Yep. Cidiots. Because small town hicks are the perfect riders. Did you stop every one of them and ask them where they were from?

I did not stop or ask where they were from & did not claim to be a perfect rider. Typical response from a Chicago burber that probably gets to go once or twice a year. Judging by your defensive post, sounds like it may have been you on the trail that day. You are opening a can of worms ripping on "small town hicks"

It's ok to rip on city people but I can't rip on small town hicks? The fact is, you have no idea who is doing what you say, so you think it must be city people, "cidiots." I've been riding snowmobiles since the 80's, and I go when I can, but when I do go I stay on the trail and treat the system better than 99% of the people out there. So don't include me in your nonsense.

Yep, I'm from outside Chicago as well, but get to sled about 2000 miles a year since the 80's and Have met just as many Cidiots as redneck riders that are Tucker hibbert wannabe's...there is no set place they come from.

you opened the "can of worms" with your dip**** comment.
