Me and the wife were planning on a trip to Keweenew peninsula from Dec 17th to 21st and looks like there is 4"+ in the forecast. I have a new 2012 Yamaha Nytro XTX setting in the garage and cannot wait for snow. Should we hold off and wait until mid January or go ahead with our trip. I just do not want to travel the 10 hours and not be able to ride. So right now I am leaning toward cancelling the trip, thoughts anyone?

that is a loooong drive to take a chance on. that being said, my wife and went up to the UP on the 17th of Feb last year. Everyone was trying to get us to cancel, even the resort owner. i think it was and it was right after a huge meltdown. no snow to be found in our area(Gogebic), but we went ice fishing instead. We were able to go up to Twin Lakes for a bit and ride, and were happy to have gone.

sled_boy, In my opinion, it would not be worth the drive right now, even if we do get the little snows in the forecast it will not be enough to really improve conditions enough to ride. We have had not only mild temps, but rain, rain mixed with "some" snow. The snows that we get tonight will in all likelyhood be the wet heavy variety. Nice stuff for re-establishing a base, but not something I would be comfortable enough to say, Oh yeah, com'on up. Again, this is my opinion.-Mezz

I agree on waiting - there is little snow and I would hate to see you take a new sled to rocks and other hazards. Sucks, but not much you can do about it.

I'm having a devil of a time convincing the young son he will have to wait to ride the new Vector on 12/26 or the week after.
If no significant base - I don't go. Wreaks havoc with your hyfax and carbides. Not worth it.

Fusion as of today no base on ER trails & are pretty much bare from panning. It would take a foot of snow to get the area trails going that bad.

Really too bad - I had 5 inches on the ground, and 7 below zero on Friday night, into Saturday A.M.
Apparently you got rain yesterday?
We had a good start at a base if it would have held. (trail 70, 4 miles west of ER)

I measured 2 inch base in my yard during rain & thaw a lot less on ER trails due to well intended trail panning pretty much down to dirt on Trail 10 along 70. No sleds out today between Phelps & ER. We picked up 2 more inches maybe more today so maybe 4 inch base I'll measure on Friday. Forest County did not open so trails towards Kentuck Lake looked reasonable since no panning yet but my best rating would be Poor just not enough snow yet to hold up to any traffic flow.

Our rule of thumb may not be popular with all, but here it goes.
The resorts / hotels are not in control of the weather. We make our reservations a year in advance, so we honor our reservations unless there were a true emergency that would prevent us from going.
The resorts don't charge for snow, so should not refund based on lack there of.

I'm still going. We're taking the sleds on a whim. I think it's going to be a fishing trip.

That makes no sense to me but your buck. All the places I stay no snow no pay or give room credit for the season when there is snow.

Yeah I am with whitedust, that makes no sense at all. I tried to get a room reservation early but knew it could be a long shot but I think most hotels will work with you if there is low or no snow. I am travelling 10 hours to go snowmobiling and not fish...So that is why I am deciding on waiting till mid-January to try again.

I can appreciate your stance if the business is working with you that way and both of you are OK with the decision.
We stay at Krupp's and they too have told us they would not hold us to our reservations if there was no snow. However, I have always told Sandy and Rich, we will always honor our reservations unless there was a real emergency that would prevent us from coming. We do this out of respect for them and their business. I am not bashing any one on they way they handle this situation. As I stated may not be popular with all, this is just the way we role. I was a business owner at one time an know that it is not easy to make ends meet. Let alone make a profit, and stay in business.

I'm sure your willingness to pay is appreciated! Anywho measured again today now up to 4 inch very very dense snow base. Forecasting another inch tomorrow so who knows may get there in 10 days? Seems to snow a little everyday in a normal December & snowing now.

We may still trailer over that way from Wetmore. Those darn above freezing temps and no snow conditions just need to stop. I'm content either way though. It's either fishing or snowmobiling. At least it's not summer anymore :)
