Ski Doo 500SS with 15,560 miles

After 14 years and 15,560 miles my wife's 'O4 rev finally took out a piston. Mind you it still ran, so we rode it back to the truck 40 miles and 60+ MPH. (that's my wife taking it easy on a broken motor). I was hoping it would go to 20,000. But I guess I will have to open it up for the first time. This sled has been pretty bulletproof, gotta love the carb 600. Couple new slugs and run it another 15,000!

That's great to get that many miles! Imagine how many revolutions that engine did. Unreal. I'm sure you did a good job of maintenance as well.

I love high mileage stories. I have 2 600 sports I hope to see that kind of mileage from...of course with the crappy snow we've had the past few winters, it's going to take 30 years.

I have a 2003 Yamaha 3 cyl with 19,794 miles. Only thing done engine is changing spark plugs, have to change them every 7-8 thousand miles.

Have about 12,200 on my '08 700 Switchback, most of which were put on in the last 4 years. Going to push it one more season. Based on a few other motors I've seen come apart from that era, I'm hoping the water pump gear on the crank will hold up for one more season. It is my kids ride, so it doesn't get quite as many miles on it, but he did manage to put 1400+ on it last year.

Three Ski Doos, two 500ss (600 carb) at approx. 9,800 miles, one 600 e-tec at 10,100 miles. No top end rebuilds.

Make sure you check rod bearings and you crank over good before you put back together. That many miles I would throw one in. 750 bucks and that motor would be brand new!

Many small block 600, (500SS) Doo's with big miles before first service is needed. Cast liners, so cheap to repair cylinder damage. Doesn't sound as she babied it either!!! Check out the bottom end good while you have it down. And at least re-lube the crank bearings with new Isoflex grease. Not hard to do. Doo talk can lead you right thru it. Fett Bros. has a kit for this also. They are good to work with, and have the best parts for your TRA clutch also. Good luck to many more happy miles!!!

i have an 06 with 6800 miles. Any advice on preventive maintenance besides checking carb boots, fog in the spring, etc? appreciate it.

One thing I had to do was replace y-pipes on all 600 carb sleds I've had. The factory y-pipes cracked. Small hairline cracks on the inside of the "Y" where the two sides meet. Really only detectable by taking pipe off and shining a flashlight from the inside. Common issue with these motors and good aftermarket Y-pipes out there for ballpark $200.

I have a 2003 Polaris 600 XC that has 17,000+ miles. Still original engine & clutch.
I have used amsoil intercepter because I hated the smell of the Polaris oil.
