Ski-Doo extra fuel tanks

Hi All,

I need some recommendations for a place that can help me order a couple extra fuel tanks for our two Ski-Doo snowmobiles. We have a 2017 Ski-Doo 900 ACE Grand Touring SE, and a 2015 Ski-Doo 800R E-TEC MXZ TNT.

We purchased them new a couple winters ago, but didn't really get a chance to use them until last winter ('17). My son and I are new to snowmobiling. We had a blast, but the conservative side of me was constantly watching the fuel gauge, checking maps, gas station locations (or other facilities that offered fuel), distance to our hotel, when the sun was due to go down, etc., etc. After seeing some other riders with extra fuel tanks on their sleds, I decided that was a good insurance policy to give me some peace of mind and told myself to get it done before the 2018 winter riding season begins...and here we are.

I visited my local Ski-Doo dealer and asked them for their help in buying the right fuel tanks for both sleds. I don't want to publicly shame them, so I'll leave their name out of it, but the couple folks I talked to weren't much help. I went online to Amazon but their ability to determine the right fuel tank with the appropriate sled is weak. Then I went to another Ski-Doo oriented site...still couldn't determine the right tank/sled association so I filled out their online form asking for some assistance - no response after 3 business days. Sooooo, I'm turning to this group. What recommendations do you have for a company that can help me buy the correct spare fuel tanks for these two sleds? Thanks!

IMO you should not need 2 tanks, if you want to get one to put on the 800, no problem.....https://www.ski-doo.com/shop/Access...=2d36527a72580904c0238b84aaad86f8&fo_s=gplaus

the 800 should and will run out of fuel well before the 900ace. especially when getting low on fuel the ace can go on ECO mode and sip fuel.

One thing that is likely scaring you is the fuel gauges. YOu may be only showing one or 2 bars of fuel but in reality you have like half a tank left.

One linq tank is 3 gallons, which should easily get you to the nearest gas station.

My memory serves me correct the grand tourings can not use the typical linq gas caddy because of the stuff already on the back of sled. But honestly the ace should go 200+ miles on a full tank......800 at least 120 when rode hard and 150 or more when not rode to hard....

also on those sleds you have to "burp' the tank when you fill up and can get a little extra in there...

I would also say don't forget to "burp" the 800 during fueling (fill the tank to the top, then depress the seat/suspension down 6 inches) and you may be able to fill another 1-1.5 gallons. I would try this on the 900 too but I am not sure about the 4-strokes need, never owned one.

Its a function of the chassis and tank design not the engine.......so yes both could be burped.....i never was able to fit over a gallon more in, usually like 1/2 gallon....

make sure also you screw the gas cap back on a little or you may end up getting fuel all over the place.

essentially the process is as mentioned fill the tank up, then screw the gas cap on a half turn or so and press down on the rear bumper to compress the rear suspension, this will release an air bubble that maybe trapped in back of tank to allow for a little more fuel

Agree... I don’t know where you are riding Canada perhaps where fuel stops are great distance apart. Wi and the UP have plenty of gas available and you have fuel efficient sleds. If just freaking out a bit make a tank measuring stick for full and half and stick it in when you don’t believe gauges. You shouldn’t fill a spare can and not use the gas as will go stale. Any skidoo dealer knows about linq set ups been around along time. Perhaps you are confusing them with terminology by saying spare tank instead of sled mounted gas can or extra onboard gas. If they don’t know linq accessories run away screwed up dealer.

I have a 1200 four stroke and check my fuel at 125 miles. Be sure to "burp" it-----I have gotten as much as a gallon and a half more in!! I also have found that my best mileage is when I have it in "sport" mode. This, based on a friend of mine and I riding the same trails, the same sled and one in sport and me in "Eco".

Ok, you guys are making me feel a WHOLE lot better about the gas situation - thank you!!! I have never heard of "burping" the tank so I'll YouTube it and figure it out. Thanks very much!

I always carried a 1.25 Gal flat Tank under my Rear Bag on my 1200 Grandtouring. Last year my Wife had a stackable Linq Tank on her 900 for me. She never needed Gas. This year I have a 900 but the G4 is one Gallon less so She may still carry the Linq Tank for me or somebody that rides with us with a Gas guzzling Polaris.. We never needed extra Gas in the UP. The Tank was used daily out West to get the 850 Summits back to the Truck.

If you Fuel up with the Front end higher than the back end you shouldn't have to burp it. Otherwise push down on the rear Bumper when its full and it will burp.

Does anyone know if you have to "burp" a 18 800 Pro-S? The way the tank is angled up towards the rear of the sled makes it appears this may be needed.

Question coming from a past Doo rider.

Pop your new seat off and you will see that very little can be gained by pressing the rear down at fill up. basically just the high spots at either side of the rear of the tank....maybe a few tenths of a gallon. Poolaris keeps things simple....like filling your gas tank.

On my quest to compare the Poo to Doo;
Engineering win #1 for Polaris (gas tank).

Just making sure I read this correctly - you're saying your best gas mileage was in SPORT mode vs. ECO mode? I would have thought the opposite would be the case.

I picked up an 03 800 rev built the crap outta it stupid powerfull.... anyways i average about 8mpg and have only ran outta fuel once and it was my fault! Just make sure you never pass a station without topping off and youll be fine! Been riding for 18 years now and only ran out once but like i said totally my fault. If you plan on night riding plan it out and dont risk it if you have to question your self DONT DO IT. Heard to many stories of guys having to sleep in the woods over the years. For you on board gas if you need it buy a 2 gal can and strap her down most aftermarket cans are 75 and up! Hooe this helps.

I agree, Snobuilder, those hoses are the best. Never a problem and they work fast. Got mine at the Derby a couple of years ago. They now sell them at the Championship Snowmobile museum next door to the Derby.

When comparing Poo to Doo mpg's this year fuji, you may find you would no longer need to burp your Doo, to go the same distance as the Poo, even with it having a larger tank???
