Sled in pickup truck

If i put my sled in the back of a pickup truck and put the rear end up in the air like a hillbilly, do i need to shutoff the fuel switch? Is there anything else i should be concerned about if i prop the skid up on the back of the tailgate while also towing a trailer? is this a better method than leaving the tailgate down? any issues with tiedowns?

Yea shut off the gas if you got a shut off on it. Leaving a 1/2 tank or less of gas in it helps also. I always put a piece of 1 x 4 board under the track on top of my tailgate to keep the studs from digging in. Then I just put a strap thru the track to ratchet it down. I have been doing it this way for years that way I can take a spare sled north with us. (tailgate is up in case you didn't get that point)

I have always left the tailgate down. Haven't had any problems to date. I use two ratchet straps, one on each side of the sled. Just make sure the tailgate will clear the trailer when you turn. The bed liner will handle the studs and carbides as long as you go easy, otherwise a piece of plywood works well. Easy in easy out when transporting this way.

That is exactly how we do it and have never had a problem. We don't shut the fuel off but you sure can wouldn't hurt I guess.

Tailgate down, never did understand why people put them up, unless they have a long v-nose trailer or something. I've read where some people keep it up so they don't get rock chips on the tailgate, umm, it's a truck right?

I have one trailer that the permanent trailer jack hits the tailgate when it is down. It sucks because a decade ago I could lift the sled and shut the tail gate myself. Now that old age has set in I need help with that project.

The top of the tail gate did get bunged up from the studs, but at least you don't have to tie the sled down. On the carbureted sleds I always shut the gas off. On the fuel injected sleds I didn’t mess with the gas shutoff. When I am not pulling that trailer, I always leave the gate down, it’s much easier.

Just a note. In a rollover situation when the tailgate is not up, the structural integrity of the bed is compromised. Not that anyone plans on rolling their truck. Jut had to throw it out there and am not trying to get on any soap box.

Yeah, I would agree. However that sled back there morphs into a 500lbs bolder when you’re flipping so box integrity may not be a concern. lol.

As stated above as long as it clears the trailer when you turn I would leave the tailgate down also. My trailer is a 4 place enclosed v nose and I can't leave the tailgate down because it won't clear the jack yet alone the v nose when I turn. Plus I have a tool box so that makes my sled hang off the back even more then if I didn't.

If you have a rollover accident you are in a heap of trouble regardless of the tailgate up or down. We refer to it as a "garage sale".....everything is totaled!

Just as a side note, you should secure the sled to the bed, nothing like a 500lb boulder coming through the back window and smashing your head through the windshield,

I've hauled mine around for yrs...Never shut off the fuel never had a problem...It sure seems like a pointless thing to put up the tailgate, unless a trailer of course like Skylar said..

Of course, the old man would Sh1t if his Pol would roll out the back...two 2000lb ratchet straps hold that 600XC just fine thank you.

there is way to much thought going in to this, the bed of your truck is made to haul stuff strap it down and turn of the gas if you feellike it and have carbs
