Hey guys, I am looking for some good places to ride and places to stop around Lake Gogebic. We have planned our annual trip this year to Lake Gogebic and there about 6 guys going. I have never ridden in this area and looking for any advice you can give me. Thanks for the advice!

We stayed on the lake a number of years ago for a week. Every day we just picked a different direction and made a big loop. It doesn't matter which way you go, it's all good.
-Hoop n Holler
-Root Cellar
-Goegebic Lodge
-FishTails?
-Konteka, just to name a few

I'll chime in tonight when I have my trail map handy...just curious though as to how far/mileage you all like to put on per day.

I will give you a couple of the routes we have gone when based out of the Gogebic Lodge (SW portion of the lake):

Trail 1...to 102 (favorite trail of all time)...meet up with 11 and head towards the big the lake and up to LOC. We then continue on 1 thru silver city and over to the Konteka for lunch. From there we like back track 1 to 11S all the way to the Wakefield area. Hop on 2 heading east back towards the lake...stopping at Bingo's is a must. From there you take the short route back on 8E or the longer route 2E towards Marenisco to 1N.

Our really long ride consists of running up the lake and taking trail 13 to Rockland/Mass City, picking up 3 and continuing through Twin Lakes to Houghton and the bridge. From there we went over to Gay and back the same way. Along the way we hit up the Freda loops (120 & 121) which are great trails.

Some years with good/great snow we have headed east towards watersmeet and bond falls via trails 2, 3 and 107 (another great trail). Additionally we have take 1N, hooked up with 12N towards Ontonagon and done some loops up there.

Basically you can't go wrong with a lot of the trails in the gogebic area. I am not a huge fan of trail 8 east of Bergland as it is old railroad bed....however it is straight and fast!

I second Bergland Bay Bar for a few pops or an italian beef. Hoop n Holler is a good stop when it is not crowded. We typically hit up Fishtales for the friday night fish fry. Haven't eaten at the Root in awhile but always a fun plac as well. Henry's in Rockland puts out a huge spread. Further up in Twin Lakes we have loved the Mosquito Inn and had good food at the Parkview. The Gay Bar in Gay was a nice stop as well!

Enjoy...you can't go wrong!

All good info from bonnevier, but I would add when you get up around Greenland and Twin Lakes area to be sure and take the trail #13 loop, it's awesome! It's 36 miles but you will be around it in no time. Where are you staying?

Be sure to stop at the Hoop 'N Holler and say hi to George. Great food! The Root Cellar is the place to eat for dinner. I've been going up there 2-5 times a year since 1993. I know the trails well.

Good area, but 2 things that I am aware of about the lake. The are often about 2- 3 large ice heaves that you will want to know about when riding on the lake at nite or in decreased visibility. You don't want to hit them - ask a local for info when you get there. Also, there is real small area of the lake in the north end east of bergland where the ice is never good and sleds have gone thru there- again check with a local.

watch for docks along the shore lines and the south end of the lake.if its snowing and blowing keep track of your riding partners gogebic is a big lake and easy to get lost on at night if your unfamiliar with it. have fun and be safe

Thanks for all the good info. I have heard about the ice heaves and people getting lost due to the size of the lake. Looks like its gonna be a great trip! I am not sure exactly where we are staying, a buddy booked the place. I have a cabin in Hayward so I almost always ride there so I am looking forward to some new sites.

Let us know if you find out the name of the place you are staying at. You guys will have an awesome time! Be sure to hit the trails covered by bonnevier and myself above. I get excited just thinking it will be someone's first time to experience the UP!! :) When are you going by the way?

As a teaser, here's a picture of trail #11 up the Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds. ;)

pwolfy2003,

Sorry man, I couldn't resist. I just got back from 6 hours of mowing the trails that I groom. It makes a big difference in some areas to mow down the tall grass. What are you going to be racking the miles up on this year? Did you get a new sled?

I'm getting anxious and hope we have a great season!

Just for the record, we love the area. be careful on the lake, most people under estimate froze lakes. The north shore gets iffy sometimes and at least for us.... something always happens.
