Sleds vs Ice Fish = MI Speed Limit

I've been reading some grumblings and rumblings on other MI sites and people are actually getting petitions together for set speed limits anywhere around ice fishermen in certain areas.

This would extend beyond the current 100' law in place. (you knew about that one right ?)

I didn't know about that one - law is you can't come within 100'?

But I know when I ride on Gogebic I steer as clear as I can of the fisherman and shantys and try to be respectful.

On sat. I was coming across the lake from the hoop, not driving very fast( I had my 4 year old sitting in front of me)I drove no closer than 100 yds from an ice shanty this guy starts pumping his fist at me as if he owns that part of the lake.I wanted to turn around and tell him off. we all have to share

it is illegal to operate a snowmobile:
On the frozen surface of public waters within 100 feet of a person, including a skater, not in or upon a snowmobile or within 100 feet of a fishing shanty or shelter except at the minimum speed required to maintain forward movement of the snowmobile, or on an area that has been cleared for ice skating, unless the area is necessary for gaining access to the public water.

I am all for safe operation of any vehicle that I control and I ride a lot in Northern WI, but why is it that some of our sportsman friends think that the orange barrels or other lake trail markers are for the best fishing spots ??? LOL....

I wonder how they determin maintain foward movement..i mean us trail riders can keep it at 4 or 5 m.p.h. but the lake racer who is clutched, piped, bored, shaved, ported, programed, nitro, and supercharged i wouldn't think his sled would roll any less then 50 or 60 m.p.h.......:D

I wish that they had a rule like that for boating in general. Except have it where if you are in a boat you have to be at least 100' from another boat.

I've been on the St. Clair River fishing and had those pleasure boaters come by on their pontoons WOT within 10 feet of my boat. I put my hands up and get the finger. There's so many idiots on the water and it seems that they're all pleasure boaters. Jet skis and all that crap.

I don't ice fish but I am a hardcore fisherman. I'd guess that a snowmobile can spook the fish just like Ricky Racer on a boat can spook the fish if he gets too close. The guy probably thought you should've been farther away maybe if you had an open lake. Who knows.

They do have a law that says you cant' be any closer than 100 feet from a boat when on plane.I have been on both sides of that fence and have had some fishing boats that anchor right in the middle of the shipping lane. But I agree that 10' is way to close and very rude.

Pretty sure they do in Michigan, unless it has changed since I owned a boat. I don't remember what the magic number is/was, though 100' sounds familiar. Obviously, not everybody abides by it.

I learned my lesson about the St. Clair River on a weekend. I just couldn't believe the mayhem that was going on in that river and the bays. I'm sure that people die out there on the weekends.

I was driving down the river going about 25mph and there was a jetskier following close behind with two rather large ladies on it. They were in the prop wash right behind the boat. Then, they went over to the starboard side and then crossed the front of my bow within less than 10 feet. All I could see was my boat running them over. I could NOT believe my eyes! Thank God that the worst didn't happen!

Always good to know the law.

gogebic sledder - totally agree. plenty o room on that lake as long as there's respect on BOTH sides.

mtb - know u weren't serious...but...laws in WI, which I don't know specifically and am too lazy to look up for you, make it illegal for the fisherman to fish on what is designated the trail. I'm not always the nicest person so when I see them fishing ON the trail, I like to buzz on by and wave?!? :D
