Smart phone help

I have not had a so called smart phone. I have had a rough service flip phone with a good receiving capabilities for poor service areas. I live where there is very weak service and smart phones seem to have a very difficult time due to the weak service. Most will not work for calls. Can anyone help me with a rough service smart phone that will work with weak signals? I will not need a whole lot of "tech". Weather and markets will be most used, and some net use. I am not by any means a phone guru. Any help will be very much appreciated. Phone stores don't seem to know a whole lot except to sell something.

I have a couple of thoughts Abe, I just made the change from an Apple I Phone to an Android product and so far, so good. I recall when the I Phones first came out that people were saying that the Flip Phones had a better antenna than the I Phones, I'm not sure if that's accurate or is still the case as you said your old phone was good at picking up signals. There's nothing "smart" about a Smart Phone if it can't pick up the signal. Coverage areas are getting better all the time but if you're in a dead zone all the cussing in the world won't pull in a signal. I guess my advice before you spend as much as 600 on a phone to watch the markets and the weather consider keeping your Flip and do the other stuff from home or work. Good luck with your choices, I'm sure others will chime in with their advice and opinions.

My boss made us get smart phones, I didn't want one, had my rough service flip phone for a year longer than most the other guys. Most of us have Samsung Galaxy S4, then we have Otterbox cases on them. No one has had issues with them, I see Patty carries hers in her back pocket. The dirt and dust have not caused problems. Been dropped several times and survived. Not sure about service, I live in the metro area so it's not an issue.
I didn't want one but now I'm glad I have one. I use it for alot more than just a phone. Posting this for instance, I use Google maps alot, and a weather app. Called radar now, and do alot of other stuff I never knew I would be. You'll probably like it once you have it. Had mine almost 2 years now and like it.

I agree. I call my phone marginally intelligent. I miss my old slide phone. Reception is very bad, Next phone may be no phone at all.

We've had good success with out LG3's so far. Good reception anywhere we go, and the phone is pretty simple to use. I know so many people that just had to have the iPhones, and they all end up going back to android products for the reasons you're dealing with. "i" products are way too much hype.....much like Harley Davidson.....LOL

My iphone does not work as a phone from home no signal strong enough to make calls. However 1 bar enough to send text & works great to surf the net with a wireless router. If you are looking to make wireless calls I feel your pain & no smart phone is going to help with that. You can set up network & make calls but that all depends on your internet service. For smart phone newbie Iphone probably best "Seri" helpful & she will take you to youtube for tech answers. I use my iphone more like a small ipad and lots of Apple products simular to iphone operation. Plenty of impressibe droids but imo start with iphone for a year then look at others once you know your way with iphone.

Well I'm on my second smart phone, first one went 4 1/2 years until it decided to jump out of my pocket into the irrigation pond at work, funny story though, it took me 40 minutes to find it, pulled battery and cards out took it home threw it in some rice for a day and it acctually started up and everything worked, went to plug it in that night wouldn't take a charge, darn!
It was a Motorola droid global, like the Android platform also.
So I am a few days in with a Kyocera Brigadier, water resistant, rough service phone, we'll see
So far so good, being 4G it is much quicker.

Thanks polar. I farm and irrigate. I need the phone with me to calculate. It will get wet sometimes. I know our signal is not strong enough to be able to operate pivots remote with phone. Many have tried. I have been told some phones receive weak signals better than others. Keep me informed on your new phone, and thanks. Sounds as if you know exactly what I'm dealing with.

My family ranches and find myself in some areas in the middle Nevada or Montana with not much signal. That being said I have found that Nokia phones seem to get the best signal but use the windows platform. There are two apps I love one is fresh network booster which actually boost the signal and open signal maps is a little different you know how sometimes you can go just three feet one way and get a better signal this will guide you to walk or drive to that spot.
