Snow pants vs. snow bibs - anyone use pants instead of bibs?

I noticed that Klim and RU Outside sell snow pants along with bibs...anyone use the pants instead of bibs? Seems like you would get cold air in there, but maybe I'm wrong.••••• would be convenient when you are going in and out of places. Just wondering if anyone has used the pants and what the experience has been.

The pants are for more agressive riding, and standing up riding. I wear bibs myself. Trail riding with alot of sitting I think bibs would be better to keep heat in and snow out.

I personally wear nothing specific to snowmobiling. Hot chilly medium/heavy bases depending on the temp. 20k waterproof/breathable skiing pants and jacket. Keeps me dry, keeps me warm; no need for me to buy more outerwear anytime soon. Except goretex pro shell jackets sure do look nice...

Klim Freeride pants here and not planning on going back to bibs soon. With the back pack and the beacon on it's nice to not have anymore junk around my chest. Very comfortable and warm I wear under armour and light fleece pants under and no prob's whatsoever. They set above your hips so no probs with falling down and they have one of the best lower leg systems ever no more pant legs riding up my boots!

I bought leather polaris pants back in 02/03. love'em. still use them every winter. when these wear out,i'll def. get more pants, not bibs. we ride alot in march and its nice to not have anything on my upper body. really nice in the bar, too. dont seem to sweat as much. IMHO

I had pants, but if your jacket doesn't hang down enough you get cold and snowy, for a girl though pants are a lot better for bathroom purposes!
I now have bibs and it keeps me warm and snow out.

I have always used bibs and not really had a problem with them. just might keep you a little warmer than pants. but im sure easier if you ride more aggressive it would be nice to have pants

First, I’m an aggressive trail rider that really moves around on the sled a lot. I do very little off trail.

I switched from bibs to pants last year after I got a Tekvest. I couldn’t get comfortable with the Tekvest and bibs. Tekvest over bibs resulted in a lot of friction of the bibs on my chest – probably because I move around so much. (Irritated chest and sore nipples = no fun) Tekvest under the bibs felt really bulky and constricting. After two days of riding I had to find another solution.

I purchased some nice Ski-Doo snowcross pants on sale, and was soon asking myself why I didn’t switch years ago. Very comfortable and non-constricting all around. Much better ventilation up top when I need it. I’ve never had a problem with drafts or snow up the back or anywhere else, and haven’t felt any significant difference in warmth overall. (Use a Castle X jacket.) I spent a fair amount of time riding around zero degrees and was fine with the pants / jacket. The modular helmet is a different story with two incidents of frostbite. I might have to find another helmet this winter for cold days. As you note, pants are much more comfortable when you stop for meals, restroom, etc.

I can’t vouch for pants for off-trail, but I don’t see ever going back to bibs myself for trail riding.

When its very cold out, 0 degrees or below, you MUST cover your cheeks when using a modular. Only your eyes should be uncovered by a balaclava (not one of those thin ones either), otherwise you will get frostbite on your cheeks when riding for extended periods.

polarisrider1,

The poster before me (t_man) said he was happy wearing pants over bibs, but stated that he had suffered frostbite as a result of wearing a modular helmet in very cold conditions. I was simply stating the facts about modular helmets, Skidoo modular helmets in particualr.

Hope that clears up your confusion.

I am having a little trouble admitting this but, I have a skidoo modular helmet (from when I took a walk on the dark side) And love it! It is not the BV2 model, it is older. You have to adjust it perfectly and use the "panty liners" in the snorkel. My tek vest does rub things up a bit. Some guys wear them over their jackets to help with that issue. Plus it looks cool. The pants should be used with a mountain style (RMK) jacket that is longer in the back. I also recomend Klim wear. I have not had any problems with anything they make. RU Outside pants are at an extreme deal right now.
