So I am sure most of you have heard of the "Mileage Man" Nick Keller and all of his accomplishments. I received a call from Nick 3 weeks or so ago and was asked to join him and the elite group to ride in his Valentines Day 500. 500 miles in one day. 16 plus hours on a sled! I have done 320 in a day but never thought about going further than that. I am gonna do it though. Along with hopefully 19 other people. I need to raise $1,000 for the Keller Family Foundation. It is a great cause. I know you guys understand what it is like to do 200 miles a day. That is why I am asking kindly for you to consider a donation or pledge to me or to the Keller Family Foundation in general. Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated!! You can do so a couple different ways. Email me @ slimcakebuddy@gmail.com Pm me through this site. Or visit either of these two sites http://www.snowballcancer.org/snowball-cancer-challenge-2016/ or http://www.berglandbaybar.com/snowball-cancer/

Tom at the Bergland Bay Bar has setup a page on his website to sponsor 3 of us and generously donated 500 bucks out of his own pocket towards our efforts. The Caledonia Volunteer Fire Dept. that I am a member of also donated $500 bucks towards my efforts. I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity and hope my fat outta shape tushy can pull it off!! I thank you in advance!!!

I have done two 500 mile days. It isn't that big of a deal if the trails are smooth and fast. 500 miles in 16 hours is an average speed of 31.25 mph. You are going to need gas 4 times. Gassing with 20 sleds will probably take 1/2 hour per time. You should eat. That will be another hour. So 16 hours turns into 13 hours of ride time. Then you have to average 38.46 mph. Still easy with good conditions. You will lose about 4 lbs. Bring Snickers and water. You will sleep really well when you are done.

So trail riders, most sleds log total hours and total miles. Go check yours and calculate miles/hour average for the life of the sled. In my experience with doing this, 20 is slow, 25 is around average and 30 is haulin' ***. To do 31.25 for that long would be tough for most.

Of course, this calculation varies due to varying warm up times, trail types / conditions, lake riding, etc. but gives you a ballpark idea of average speed.

It is hard to make time with big groups. Too many extra variables. Keller has done most of his miles solo. However I have no doubt that Keller has a plan. Hope for a bright sunshiny day. Make sure all your equipment both your sled and your gear are perfect and ready to go. Especially your shields or goggles. Put on the biggest windshield you can get. Fogging is one thing but continual snow dust in the air will screw up shields and goggles too. There is going to be a lot of dust for everyone but the leader. I can't imagine riding in the back 10 is going to be much fun at all. There will be at the most 10 hours of full daylight. Plan on running as fast as possible then. If it is gray and cloudy or snowing or super cold it will be an adventure. Cold really wears you out and you don't even realize it. All you can do is hope for the best and be prepared.

From outside of Chicago to Bergland is approx 400 miles...can't imagine doing that on a sled PLUS adding an extra hondo ALL in one day! Kuddos to all for the effort and fund raising.

If you have a good route and decent trails, 500 mi. should be easy. My best day was 464mi. Sheboygan wi. to Copper Harbor in 13 hours.

If you want to do a run like that again and need someone to ride with you hit me up. Sounds like an awesome ride.

You will lose about 4 lbs.

I should go on one of these rides every week. I have not ridden 500 miles in a day yet, 380 is the most so far but I did have a 330 mile day and a 575 mile weekend on a leaf spring sled in 1983 and had a 15 plus hour day in a groomer last week.

Getting closer to go time. I spent the week in the U.P. last week and spent a bunch of money getting my gear set up. The guy at Pats that put my windshield on told me I need to watch for low bridges and powerlines..... lol. As stated above you can put a name on the t-shirts or just order one up. This is a great cause guys. Please give it some thought. Here is another spot to order shirts. https://www.booster.com/snowballcancerorg Thanks guys!!
