Snowfall decrease?

Hey John-

Without going back and looking at snowfall totals month to month for different regions, do winter storms diminish in size/potential as winter progresses? I was just wondering if there is any data you have that shows bigger storms happen sooner than later in winter or vice versa.

Also, Thank you for the great site and excellent forecast reports (although sometimes depressing) checking your forecasts and reading the forecast texts are a daily ritual for me!

Thanks,
Doug

I don't think there is really a propensity for storms to be larger earlier in the winter than later in the season.

One of the main factors that determine the strength of a low is the temperature difference it has to work with in the region it is passing through. However, this strong temperature difference can happen at any time of the year and I have seen some big low pressure systems happen at any time of the winter.
