Snowmobile Death-Iron County

A snowmobiler was killed early Monday morning between Hurley and Mercer on Arrowhead Road. A copy of the report in the Ironwood Daily Globe is below.

1 killed in snowmobile crash

MERCER, Wis. -- A Luxemburg, Wis., man died early Monday morning following a snowmobile accident on Arrowhead Road in Mercer, according to an Iron County Sheriff's Department report.

Kevin Risner, 43, died after his snowmobile hit a sign on the road at about 3:06 a.m., said Sheriff Bob Bruneau.

Risner's death is Iron County's first snowmobile fatality of the season.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, the report said.

Following the accident, Risner was transported to the Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff by Mercer Ambulance.

A sad and yet never-ending cycle. I was out riding with my neighbor a MN State Patrolman last night and we were talking about drinking and riding and how easy it would have been for either of us to wrap ourselves around a tree. I drink root beer just for that reason.

If you want a sobering reminder of how easy it would be to die from blunt force trauma (leading cause fo death for snowmobiliers) turn sideways when riding at 20mph and see how fast the trees go by, then imagine yourself colliding with one. Who do you know that goes just 20 mph on the trails? Look at those trees at trail speeds...

My friend mentioned that at speed over just 40mph, the fatality rate is nearly a sure bet.

Iam very sorry for the family. . With how much we know today on how drinking impairs drivers. Im glad he hit a sign and not another person.
