Snowmobile Tach not working Properly...Help Please!

Hello, quick question here. So I recently (over the summer) put on a newer Tach (gauge pod) on one of my older sleds. Basically went from the Polaris's small gauges to there larger style gauges. I hooked all the wires up to what I thought was the same corresponding wire. All of my gauges seem to work, as well as the lights and switches, but the tach does not seem to work properly. It only moves a little bit and is very slow to repsond. Plus when i rev it up it never goes above 2k rpms and I know the sled is really doing about 4-4.5Krpms (because it engauges at 4500 and it wants to take off).

Any ideas....... Think maybe it is not grounded good enough??? Shoot me some ideas if you got them.

Thanks

You may have bought the wrong pulse. I think the come in 2/4/6 pulse styles. Check tosee what pulse your motor is and then check to make sure you have the right tach

Yep it's either setup wrong for the number of cylinders or else a bad ground....if it shows a steady "percentage" of the true RPM's my money is on the pulse style....if it's all over the place then it has a bad ground.....had a sled years ago that did this after an engine rebuild, finally pulled all the connectors, cleaned and added dilectric grease and no problems after that.

Years ago I put a tach in a Ford Fairlane that had a V8 but the tach came preset for 6 cylinders....it made the engine seem like much more of a revver than it actualy was....and the first time I cranked it up to 5K the tach was well past 6K (the limit on that tach) and that was the last time it worked....got another one and set it up correctly BEFORE trying it out. So if it's showing less than true RPM's it's set for too more cylinders than your sled has.....if it's a generic tach many of them have a selector on the back for the # of cylinders.....good luck!

Ya... the tach must be set up for a triple cylinder, as that is what it came off of. Never even thought about that being an issue when I switched them over..... I bet that is it though!

I thought that tachs read the pulses from the lighting coil
so it may have a different number of magnets in the flywheel.
