The black hills sound as a nice place to ride. Deadwood/Lead area has a trail system.

Spearfish Canyon Lodge is a great place to base out of,,,,they have excellent accomodations, sled rentals, and is on the trailhead for the Black Hills trails....

I've rode the hills 4 different times and have always had fun. I'd stay either in Lead or SpearFish canyon, direct trail access. Another good place would be Trailshead.
The trails are good, there are also tons of forest roads to ride and lot's of boondocking to do. If you hit the snow conditions right, you'll have a great time. If you get there and the conditions are not as good, it's just another 3 or so hrs down I90 to the big horns.

We went last week of March last year and plan to go back again. It was awesome, but we chased the snow out there and got dumped on when we got there too. We stayed at Deadwood Gulch Resort in Deadwood (check their website) Make sure you ride to Mystic Hills Campground (they are really nice peoples) The trails are excellently marked and plenty of off trail areas to play. Spearfish Canyon has a webcam but is on the spendy side, Mystic is out on the trail and has all you need and the Gulch is in town on the trail w/shuttle down to the Casino area hourly if the women get tired. Check for snow conditions and go.

Spearfish is excellent but spendy and at the end of the trails, Deadwood Gulch is in town and on the trail but a Casino (shuttle service to "downtown" if you feel the need to gamble and Mystic Hills Campground is out on the trail and has all you need. Load up and go.
The last few years the Hills have been getting absolutely huge spring storms......(march or april). Never been able to catch one in time but some friends have and they said it was awesome. If you like to wing it, by that I mean ready to go at anytime, this can be a good choice. Gotta love that Saloon 10 for nightlife, very fun.
