As the title says, i'll be in South Range over the new year. (at the Wildlife Cabins) and i'll be riding trail only as its with the family. I'm looking to catch a few sights that maybe accessible by trail. Like overlooks, or other cool sights. I've read about the waterfalls and may do a tad more researchon that too.

What can i expect? Sorrry, i'm popping my UP cherry seeing it my first time up there.

Firesteel Bridges, Lake of the clouds in Silver City, Brockway Mtn near Copper Harbor are all potentials for you. I'm sure there are plenty more I'm not thinking of.

Hey, congrats. We usually stay at Wildlife over New Years and decided to stay in Land'o this year. You made a good choice, you'll love their cabins, facility and location. If you ride up to Copper Harbor make sure you run up Brockway Mountain to the lookout (don't worry there's a road you go up, safe for the whole family). Unless your in a blizzard you can look out across Lake Superior and down on Copper Harbor (as pictured). We usually stop in at Zik's in Copper Harbor for a bite to eat, but get there before 3 or so, they shut down the grill! I think the lift bridge downtown Houghton/Hancock is pretty cool too. The Library is a good place for food and drinks in Houghton right off the trail. Henry's Never Inn is a good place to eat down in Rockland, they have a HUGE smorgasbord on the weekends. However it is always packed when we go, you may have to wait for a table. Sorry we've haven't been fortunate enough yet to come across any waterfalls. I think you'll find the scenery in general is pretty cool... not much flat land... small mountains, cliffs, and large rolling areas. Feels like a different world compared to flatland IL. You'll have a great time.

The Red Ridge steel dam on the north Freda trails is neat structure and right near lake Superior. Its an easy trail ride from where you are staying.

Fun

You'll have a great experience. Someone else will have to get you information going north, but to the south you'll have some great sights. The trail system to the south is pretty self explanitory. We have often stayed in Hurley and make a run up to Houghton via 13 and 3, spend the night and bring the loop back down along the east side of the UP to 8, back to the north side of Lake Gogebic. If you run back across on 8, it's worth cutting down 3 to Bonds Falls for a quick side bar.

If you run along superior, the Porcupine Mountain area has a great Lake Superior overlook. I think it's called Lake of the Clouds.

If you get south on trail 109 there is the Sturgeon Valley overlook. And then there is a straight section northbound on 15/8 that is all hills. Even if you go at group trail speed (slow) you will get airborn at the top of each hill. This goes on for miles and brings out the kid in you. Great fun.
