Can you by chance hang the tire from the underside of the tongue right about where the tilt bed clamp holds the bed down? I have a buddy that had a Triton that did that and it worked like a million bucks. By the way he towed with a pick up so the tongue was not close to the ground. I would think if you're towing with a car or mini van that might not work.
I just throw my spare in the back of the truck for the winter, keeps it out of the slop and keeps it from rusting out before you get a chance to use it.

I carriage bolted mine to the underside of the front corner of the deck using a bolt and the same size nuts as the lugs. You will need a tire iron to change your tire so needing a wing nut seems like an extra convenience when you have a perfectly good wrench right there. If I had to do it again I would have made tubing for standoffs so it didnt distort the decking as much and I could really clamp her down. Afterwards I hosed everything with white lithium to slow the salt related corrosion which will be instant.

I don't care to be on my back getting a tire out from under a trailer in the cold or slop!
