spark plug question

Do I have to use BR9ECS plugs in my REV 500SS? I just got this sled and was shocked that the plugs are $11 each versus the BR9ES ones I used previously for $3 each. Is it ok to use the cheaper plugs or stick with what is called for?

What does the owner's manual say?
The 500SS is basically Doo's old 600 engine (which I had at one time) and it took the ES. Is it possible the previous owner put in the wrong plugs?

I'm sure somebody on here can explain the technical differences between the two plug types (I know they can on DooTalk, as I just read a thread on that subject), but the bottom line is....you can't go wrong following the owner's manual!

I haven't personally heard of any doos except the 800's running the ecs but I could be wrong. If you do need them go to auto zone or parts store like that. 1/2 the price or better. I always get mine at snow shows. $12 a box for es and $30 a box for ecs..basically it is the same size and heat of plug but the gometry is different on the fireing tip.

DooSki_Dan,

$11 each? Wow, don't buy 'em from there, they are ripping people off!

Run what your Owner's Manual recommends. If you don't have one for your sled, then call up a Ski Doo dealer and ask them. Like some of these guys have already pointed out, you can usually save a lot of money by buying spark plugs at places OTHER than the dealer. Good auto parts stores almost always carry the correct plugs for your sled. And, if for some strange reason they don't stock them, they can always get them from their supplier within a day or two. Oh, and there's always eBay!

Of all places, my local hardware store actually carries both of the spark plugs that you mentioned. What's funny is that they charge the same price ($3.29) for each part number! So, what does that tell you? I can still buy the BR9ES plugs at my auto parts stores for $2.50 each. (In fact I get better discounts beyond that as well, but that's because I'm a commercial buyer.) I know the BR9ECS's run a little more, but not very much.

I'm not a Doo guy, but that doesn't matter. I have over 15 yrs. experience as a tech.

As for the actual differences in the spark plugs? Well the obvious visual differences are in the electrodes. Beyond that, I haven't taken the time to find out if there are any other differences, such as heat range variations or etc. If I were a bettin' man, I'd say there are only minor differences, but why would you risk it?

Like I said, just run what is SUPPOSED to be in there from the factory. It's much safer to err on the side of caution when it comes to spark plugs. Unless they are worn out or are fouling out, you don't need to replace them either. I've got some sleds that I've been running the same plugs on for several seasons. As the saying goes; "If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!"
Not to mention, if the plugs are continually fouling out, then you have other issues that need to be addressed!

Peace out.

B -- 14mm Thead Diameter
R -- Resistor Type
9 -- Heat range from 2 being hot 10 being cold
E -- 19mm {3/4} wrench size
C -- Dual Ground special alloy / firing end
S -- Standard Center Electrode / construction

Hope this helps.

My 2005 Ski Doo 500SS uses BR9ECS plugs not the standard BR9ES plugs. They were in there from new and I just keep using them. You can get them at Napa for $3.50 or something like that(maybe less). $11 is a rip off! Ouch.

Just to muddy the waters, there are acually two different BR9ECS plugs in the field and the difference is in the gap. One is at .018" and the other at .031"

Go out to DooTalk and complete a search, it is unbelievable the amount of threads on the subject. Also, some of the owner's manuals are not correct as there were changes made mid-printing at least on the 800's. The best thing to do is lift your hood and check for the required gap on the specifications decal and go with that.

I always bring a spark plug gap gauge with me to verify which gap is on the plugs I'm going to purchase to make sure they are correct due to the different stock codes as mentioned above. I have a 06' 500SS that call out for a BR9ECS that calls out the .018" gap and the 600SDI calls out for the BR9ECS with a .031" gap and an 06 800 PTEK that calls out .018" in the owners manual & .031" on the decal under the hood on the cross member. CRAZY!!!!!
