Apparently electrical discharges 30-60 miles above the earth linked to thunderstorms??

I have heard of them, but never seen them. My brother is a commercial airline pilot and has seen them. They had actually been seen for years by pilots, but most did not want to say what they saw for fear of being accused of "seeing things" and thus not fit to fly. Then some NASA astronauts saw them, captured images of them and the reports have been more common now.

There are three types of lightning:
Cloud to cloud
Cloud to ground
Cloud to infinity (sprites)
