Ssw?

Hi John.
Happy New Year.
I have recently read about a "sudden stratospheric warming event" setting up for late January.
Is this based on valid science? If so, will it have significant affect on temps/precip for MN/WI/MI?

Happy New Years to you too steelhead.

I would have to say that the current state of the SSW is somewhere between unicorn poop and solid science. It is something that has not been known about for too long and does not happen very often, so there is not a lot of data to base solid conclusions on. With that said, there is growing evidence that it CAN have an influence on the weather we experience here at the surface.

Just a cautionary note, I did read most of the article that Gary posted and it seems to me the author might have taken some creative liberties when writing it! Not all hog wash, but they did reach at times!
